Amazed

Chapter 1

"Grandma says Daddy's real baby is coming soon."

I looked up from the laundry basket in my hands.

Poppy sat on the edge of our bed, one pink flower clip slipping loose in her hair, her small face far too serious for a five-year-old.

"She said once he gets here, I won't need Daddy's room anymore."

The air left my chest.

For months, I had tried to build a wall between my daughter and the ugliest parts of Grant's death. The affair. The pregnant mistress. The inheritance arguments. The way Margaret—my mother-in-law—had slowly, quietly stopped treating Poppy like family the moment she learned there was a biological grandchild on the way.

I thought I had kept her safe.

I thought wrong.

Poppy had noticed things anyway.

The ultrasound picture tucked inside Margaret's phone case.

The way she now called the unborn baby "the Bennett heir," like Poppy was just a placeholder.

The way she had stopped saying "our granddaughter" and started saying "your girl" instead.

I sat beside her on the bed, folding a small shirt into my lap.

"Sweetheart, nobody gets to decide you belong here less just because another child is being born."

Poppy stared down at her hands, twisting her fingers together.

"But Grandma owns part of the house, right?"

I went very still.

Margaret had owned part of it.

Past tense.

I had emptied every dollar of my savings. Sold the small property my own father left me. Refinanced the mortgage twice. And paid Margaret every cent she demanded to buy her out of this house.

The deed had my name on it now. Only mine.

What I didn't know then was that Margaret had already started asking questions about Grant's private office—the one I kept locked and hadn't touched since the funeral.

Or that his pregnant mistress would soon walk through my back door, right beside her.

Or that by the end of the next afternoon, I would discover that humiliating Poppy was only the beginning of what they had come here to do.

Because somewhere inside Grant's old files was something Margaret was willing to cross every boundary to find.

And once I learned what it was, the fight over who counted as family would become much darker than any of us expected.
