Amazed

Chapter 12

I drove home an hour later.

Sarah was in the living room watching TV when I walked in. Poppy was asleep on the couch, her head in Sarah's lap.

"Everything okay?" Sarah whispered.

I nodded. "For now."

I sat down beside her.

"Sarah, I need to tell you something. Something big. And you can't tell anyone. Not even your husband. Promise me."

Sarah's face turned serious. She nodded.

"I promise."

I told her everything. The affair. Lena. The will. The letter from Grant. The evidence against Margaret. The recording.

Sarah listened in silence, her hand covering her mouth.

When I finished, she was crying.

"Oh my God," she whispered. "Grant was murdered. And Margaret... she's been after you this whole time."

I nodded.

"I need to hire a lawyer. A really good one. And I need to do it without Margaret finding out."

Sarah took my hand.

"I know someone. My cousin. He's a lawyer. Specializes in criminal defense and estate law. He's good. Really good. And he's discreet."

"Can you call him?" I said. "Tomorrow. Tell him it's an emergency."

"First thing in the morning," Sarah said.

She looked down at Poppy, who was sleeping peacefully.

"What about Lena? Where is she going to stay? If Margaret finds out she's working with us, she'll be in danger."

I thought about this.

Lena had nowhere to go. Margaret had been paying for her apartment. If she found out Lena had betrayed her, she would cut her off immediately. And probably worse.

"She can stay here," I said.

Sarah stared at me.

"Here? Audrey, are you sure? She's the woman your husband—"

"I know," I said. "But she's pregnant. And she's alone. And she's scared. And she's our only witness against Margaret. I can't leave her out there alone."

Sarah looked at me for a long moment. Then she nodded.

"Okay. But if you need me to move in too, just say the word. I'm not letting you go through this alone."

I squeezed her hand.

"Thanks, Sarah."

The next morning, I called Lena.

"Pack a bag," I said. "You're moving in with me. And don't tell Margaret where you're going."

"Are you sure?" she said.

"Positive. We're safer together. And we need to start planning."

An hour later, Lena arrived with two suitcases and a pillow. She looked nervous as she stood in my doorway.

Poppy peeked out from behind my legs.

"Is she staying with us?"

I nodded.

"Lena is going to stay with us for a little while. Is that okay?"

Poppy looked at Lena, then at her stomach.

"Is the baby going to stay too?"

May you like

I smiled softly.

"Yes, baby. The baby is going to stay too."
