Amazed

Chapter 13

I turned the west wing into a foundation office.

Elena’s name went on the door.

The Lily Moretti Children’s Safety Fund.

We paid for medication, legal help, emergency housing, and allergy care for children whose parents were trapped between poverty and danger.

Hannah agreed to consult.

Not for charity.

For salary.

She negotiated hard.

I admired that.

“You need someone who knows what forms actually confuse people,” she said. “And someone who knows pharmacies don’t care if a child is loved.”

She was right.

She was often right.

Ellie started preschool with a backpack full of EpiPens.

Six of them.

She showed me proudly.

“Now I can save me and you.”

Hannah said, “Ellie.”

I smiled.

“Let’s try not to need saving.”

Ellie nodded.

“Good plan.”

Slowly, the mansion changed.

Rooms opened.

Dust sheets came off furniture.

Lily’s room stayed closed until one rainy morning when Ellie asked if Rosie could meet the bear.

I looked at Hannah.

She whispered, “Only if you want.”

I opened the door.

Ellie walked in like it was a chapel.

She placed Rosie beside Lily’s stuffed bear.

“Hi,” she whispered. “We both helped.”

I sat on the floor and cried.

Hannah sat beside me.

She did not touch me.

She just stayed.

Sometimes staying is louder than comfort.

Months passed.

The foundation grew.

Reporters called me reformed.

I hated that word.

Reform sounded clean.

Nothing about grief was clean.

I was not reformed.

I was responsible.

There is a difference.

One evening, Hannah found me in the study, staring at the old wine stain that cleaners had never fully removed.

“Replace the carpet,” she said.

“I thought leaving it mattered.”

“It did. Now maybe removing it matters.”

So I did.

Under the carpet, the floorboards were scarred from where I had fallen.

Ellie saw them and said, “That’s where breathing came back.”

I looked at Hannah.

She smiled softly.

May you like

For the first time, the room did not feel like the place I almost died.

It felt like the place a child chose life.
