The foundation’s first gala was held in the mansion ballroom.
I almost canceled it three times.
Too many people.
Too many suits.
Too many memories of the old life.
Hannah refused.
“You don’t get to build something good and hide it like contraband.”
She wore a simple blue dress.
Ellie wore silver shoes and carried Rosie.
I wore no black.
That was Hannah’s idea too.
“You look like a storm cloud pretending to be a man,” she had said.
So I wore navy.
Ellie approved.
“You look less scary.”
High praise.
The gala raised enough money to fund emergency medication for two thousand children.
During my speech, I looked at Ellie.
She waved.
I forgot half my prepared remarks.
So I told the truth.
“I survived because a child had more courage than men who called themselves loyal,” I said. “This foundation exists because no parent should have to choose between rent and the medicine that keeps a child breathing.”
Hannah’s eyes shone.
Later, Agent Morales told me Carlo’s final appeals had failed.
Matteo’s too.
Vincent had testified in three additional cases from prison.
The network was gone.
Not weakened.
Gone.
I went to the chapel alone after the gala.
Elena’s recording had been moved to a secure archive.
Lily’s bracelet rested in a glass case beside a photo of her laughing.
I whispered, “I’m trying.”
Hannah’s voice came from behind me.
“I think they know.”
I turned.
She stepped closer.
“I used to hate you.”
“I know.”
“I needed someone alive to blame.”
“I know.”
“But David went to Elena because he trusted someone in this house. That means there was good here before Ellie found it.”
I could not speak.
Hannah touched my hand.
This time, she did not pull away.
“I’m not saying I forgive everything your name has done.”
“You shouldn’t.”
“I’m saying I see what you’re doing now.”
That was more than I deserved.
But I accepted it carefully.
