Amazed

Chapter 1

I brought my seven-year-old son to my ex-husband’s wedding because he begged to see his father—then the groom went silent when my son handed the bride a small box.

My ex-husband, Ethan, was marrying a woman named Madison at a luxury hotel in Atlanta.

We had been divorced for almost three years.

Our son Noah still asked about him every week.

“Will Dad be happy if I come?”

I forced a smile.

“Of course he will.”

When we entered the reception hall, people immediately started staring.

Ethan saw us from across the room.

His smile disappeared.

He hurried toward me.

“What are you doing here, Sarah?”

“Noah wanted to see you.”

Ethan lowered his voice.

“You weren’t invited.”

Noah heard him.

His little face fell.

“I just wanted to say congratulations, Dad.”

For a second, Ethan looked ashamed.

Then Madison walked over in her wedding dress.

She looked at me, then at Noah.

“So this is your ex-wife.”

I nodded politely.

Noah reached into his jacket pocket.

“I brought you something.”

Madison smiled.

“For me?”

He handed her a small velvet box.

Ethan suddenly grabbed Noah’s wrist.

“Where did you get that?”

Noah looked frightened.

“From your old drawer.”

Ethan’s face changed instantly.

Madison opened the box.

Inside was a diamond ring.

But it wasn’t the ring that made her freeze.

There was a tiny folded note underneath it.

Madison pulled it out.

Ethan tried to snatch it away.

“Don’t read that.”

The entire table went quiet.

Madison unfolded the note.

Her eyes moved across the first line.

Then she looked at Ethan.

“Who is Emily?”

Ethan said nothing.

Madison kept reading.

Her hands began shaking.

I stepped closer.

“What does it say?”

She turned the note toward me.

The date at the top was only six months old.

We had been divorced for almost three years.

Then Madison whispered the sentence that made Ethan step backward.

“Ethan promised this ring to another woman last Christmas.”
