Amazed

Chapter 3

Detective Hale ordered patrol officers to follow Diane’s car.

They found it abandoned behind a shopping center.

Ryan and Diane were gone.

On the passenger seat, police found a note.

Claire has what belongs to us.

I read the sentence again and again.

“What does that mean?” Elena asked.

“I don’t know.”

But Mia was staring at the life insurance policy.

“They may believe you have evidence they need.”

Hale told us not to return to my house.

He arranged a temporary hotel room under another name, but Mia insisted we stay at her apartment instead.

“I have cameras and a secure garage,” she said. “And Ryan doesn’t have a key.”

Noah sat quietly in the back seat while we drove.

He had heard too much.

At Mia’s apartment, Elena tucked him into bed and promised everything would be fine.

When she returned to the living room, she was crying.

“I kept letting Ryan see him,” she whispered. “I thought a bad husband could still be a good father.”

“You didn’t know.”

“I knew he lied. I just didn’t know how much.”

I understood that shame.

I had ignored strange phone calls, unexplained trips, and missing bank statements because Ryan always had an answer.

Love had not blinded me.

Ryan had trained me to doubt my own eyes.

Mia opened her laptop and searched the public records connected to Parker Family Holdings.

The company owned nothing.

However, it had transferred money to a private care facility outside the city.

The patient was listed as Thomas Parker.

Ryan’s father.

“That’s impossible,” I said. “Ryan told me his father died six years ago.”

Elena stared at the screen.

“He told me Thomas abandoned the family.”

Another lie.

The next morning, Hale drove us to the facility.

Thomas Parker was alive.

He was thin and weak, but his eyes sharpened when he heard Ryan’s name.

“You’re Claire,” he said.

I stopped beside his bed.

“How do you know me?”

“Ryan kept photographs.”

Thomas explained that he had discovered Diane stealing money from elderly clients at the accounting firm they once owned.

When he threatened to report her, Diane and Ryan used a false medical evaluation to declare him mentally incompetent.

They placed him in the facility and controlled his finances.

“I tried to warn you,” Thomas said.

He pointed toward a locked drawer.

Hale opened it with permission.

Inside were dozens of returned letters addressed to me and Elena.

Diane had intercepted every one.

Thomas had also kept a small flash drive.

It contained recordings of conversations between Ryan and Diane.

In one recording, Diane said my house would cover their debts.

In another, Ryan mentioned the insurance policy.

“If she refuses to sign the second loan,” Ryan said, “we move to the other plan.”

My blood turned cold.

“What other plan?” I asked.

Thomas closed his eyes.

“I never found out.”

Hale took the drive as evidence.

Mia began the legal process to remove Diane as Thomas’s guardian.

For the first time, we had proof linking her directly to the fraud.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message from Ryan appeared.

It included a photograph of my bedroom.

He was inside my house.

Beneath the picture, he had written:

Come alone, or the truth about your sister goes to the police.

I showed Mia.

Her face changed.

“What truth?” I demanded.

She took the phone from my hand.

Before she could answer, another photograph arrived.

It showed Mia standing beside Ryan outside a hotel three years earlier.

My stomach twisted.

Ryan’s next message came immediately.

Ask her how our affair began.

Elena stepped away from us.

I looked at my sister.

“Tell me that picture is fake.”

Mia’s eyes filled with tears.

“It isn’t what he says.”

“Then what is it?”

She lowered her voice.

“I met Ryan before you did.”

The room seemed to disappear around me.

Mia reached for my hand.

I pulled away.

She had warned me not to trust Ryan from the beginning.

Now I finally knew why.
