Amazed

Chapter 7

Diane sat in a police car while Hale questioned Noah about the note.

Ryan had slipped it into his pocket before bringing him to the cabin.

“He told me not to show Grandma,” Noah said.

That meant Ryan had turned against Diane.

Or he wanted us to believe he had.

Fire trucks were already racing toward Thomas’s old accounting office when we arrived.

Smoke poured from a second-floor window.

Diane had arranged the fire before meeting us.

Hale ordered everyone to remain outside, but Ruth shouted that the records were stored beneath Thomas’s former office.

A firefighter found a trapdoor under the carpet.

The flames had not reached it.

Inside the hidden space were boxes containing financial records, photographs, and audio tapes.

There were files for dozens of victims.

Diane had spent thirty years stealing from vulnerable people.

Ryan had helped her hide the crimes since he was seventeen.

One file contained documents connected to Margaret Bell’s death.

Another contained hospital records proving Diane bribed a doctor to have Thomas declared incompetent.

“This ends her control over him,” Mia said.

But Hale found something else.

A notebook written by Ryan.

The earliest entries described a frightened teenager obeying his mother.

Later entries showed a man who had learned to enjoy the power.

Ryan documented his lies as if they were business strategies.

He studied our weaknesses.

He knew Elena feared losing Noah.

He knew I wanted a stable family after our parents died.

He knew Mia carried guilt about the hotel incident.

“He didn’t love any of us,” Elena said.

“He selected us.”

The words hurt because they were true.

At sunrise, police charged Diane with kidnapping, fraud, conspiracy, arson, and attempted murder.

She demanded a lawyer and refused to speak.

Ryan remained missing.

Divers found the abandoned boat across the lake.

Near it, Hale discovered a bloody shirt.

There was no body.

Two days passed.

News stations reported the scandal.

More victims came forward.

The bank temporarily suspended foreclosure proceedings against my house.

Thomas was released from the care facility and moved into Ruth’s home.

It should have felt like victory.

Instead, I checked every locked door twice.

On the third night, someone knocked on Mia’s apartment door.

It was Ryan.

He was soaked and bleeding from a cut along his side.

Mia reached for her phone.

Ryan raised both hands.

“If you call the police before listening, Diane’s lawyer will destroy Claire and Elena.”

Elena stepped between him and Noah’s room.

“You have ten seconds.”

Ryan said Diane had kept secret recordings of us.

She had edited conversations to make it sound as if Elena and I planned the loan fraud with him.

She had also created messages suggesting Mia offered legal advice.

“Where are the recordings?” I asked.

“In a storage unit registered under Claire’s name.”

I felt sick.

Police would believe I had hidden evidence.

“Why are you telling us?” Mia asked.

“Because my mother left me to die at the lake.”

Ryan claimed Diane fired at him as he escaped.

He wanted protection in exchange for evidence.

“You kidnapped your own son,” Elena said.

“I was trying to keep my mother calm.”

“You tied his hands.”

Ryan looked toward the hallway.

“I’m sorry.”

Elena slapped him.

He did not fight back.

Mia called Hale.

Ryan reached inside his wet jacket.

Elena grabbed a kitchen knife, but Ryan only removed a key.

It belonged to the storage unit.

“There’s something else inside,” he said.

“A video Diane recorded the night Margaret Bell died.”

Police arrived and handcuffed him.

As Hale led him away, Ryan looked at me.

“My mother will never let that video reach court.”

“She’s in jail.”

Ryan gave a tired smile.

“You still don’t understand her.”

Ten minutes later, Hale received an emergency call.

Diane had collapsed in her cell.

An ambulance transported her to the hospital.

During the transfer, the ambulance was struck by a black SUV.

When police reached the wreck, the guards were injured.

The ambulance doors were open.

Diane had disappeared.
