Amazed

Chapter 1

I came home early to surprise my 4-year-old daughter on her birthday.

What I saw in my kitchen made me stop cold.

My 11-year-old son, Noah, was standing at the sink, crying while washing a mountain of dirty dishes with one hand.

Behind him, little Lily sat on the floor in her birthday dress, clutching an empty paper plate.

“Daddy… we weren’t allowed at the party.”

My wife’s mother, Diane, stepped out of the dining room.

“Don’t make this dramatic,” she snapped. “Noah talked back, so I gave him chores. Lily wouldn’t behave.”

Then I heard laughter outside.

Through the patio doors, I could see dozens of adults eating the birthday food I had paid for.

But there wasn’t a single child there.

I pulled Noah away from the sink.

That was when a crumpled receipt fell from his pocket.

Diane’s face instantly went pale.

“Give me that.”

I unfolded it.

It wasn’t for groceries.

It showed thousands of dollars charged to my card for jewelry, champagne, and a private event company.

At the bottom was a handwritten note:

Transfer remaining birthday fund to Diane’s account.

I stared at her.

“What birthday fund?”

Noah wiped his tears.

“There are more receipts in Grandma’s purse.”

Diane rushed toward the dining room.

Then Lily whispered something that made my stomach drop.

“Grandma said Mommy can’t know where the money really went.”

Diane stopped cold.

And suddenly, I realized my daughter’s birthday party had never been for her.
