Amazed

Chapter 9

Robert asked to speak with Emily and Melissa together.

We went to the hospital before sunrise.

Diane remained in custody.

Colin and Dr. Ross were being held separately.

Detective Hayes stood outside Robert’s room while the sisters sat beside his bed.

His speech was weak.

Each word required effort.

But his mind was clear.

“Diane paid Ross,” he said.

Emily nodded.

“We know.”

Robert shook his head.

“Someone… gave her idea.”

“Colin?”

“No.”

“Who?”

Robert looked toward Melissa.

She stiffened.

“Dad?”

He slowly said one name.

“Victor.”

Melissa stood so quickly that her chair fell.

“No.”

Emily looked between them.

“Who is Victor?”

Melissa’s face had become white.

“My ex-husband.”

I remembered Victor Lane.

He and Melissa had divorced three years earlier.

We had been told the marriage ended because Victor had cheated.

Diane despised him.

At least, she claimed she did.

“Why would Victor be involved?” Emily asked.

Melissa pressed both hands against her mouth.

Robert struggled to explain.

Victor had worked in estate planning.

He had reviewed my mother’s trust after her death because Diane recommended him.

That was how Diane learned the guardianship clause.

Victor also knew which documents needed to be forged.

He had introduced Colin to Diane.

Then he deliberately created conflict in his marriage so Melissa would leave him without investigating their finances.

“Mom told me he was stealing from me,” Melissa whispered.

Robert nodded.

“Both… stealing.”

Detective Hayes contacted Victor’s office.

It was empty.

His assistant said he had canceled every appointment and left town.

Police traced his phone to an airport parking garage.

His car was there.

He was not.

Then my phone rang.

The caller ID showed the children’s hotel.

I answered immediately.

Noah was crying.

“Dad, Lily’s gone.”

My body turned cold.

“What do you mean?”

“Aunt Grace came to the door.”

Grace was with us at the hospital.

“What did she look like?”

“She had Grace’s hair and coat. The officer let her into the hall. Then the lights went out. She took Lily down the stairs.”

Detective Hayes was already moving.

Hotel security footage showed a woman wearing a wig and a coat like Grace’s.

She carried fake identification.

She entered during a shift change.

Then someone triggered the fire alarm and cut power to two cameras.

The woman led Lily through the emergency stairs.

A waiting car took them away.

Noah had tried to follow.

The woman locked the stairwell door behind her.

Melissa looked at the security image.

“I know her.”

“Who?” Detective Hayes asked.

“Victor’s sister, Rachel.”

Rachel Lane had worked as a private investigator before losing her license.

She had attended several family gatherings years earlier.

Lily might have remembered her as a familiar adult.

Detective Hayes issued an abduction alert.

I could barely breathe.

Emily did not cry.

She became frighteningly calm.

“Victor wants the trust.”

Grace nodded.

“Taking Lily does not give him legal access.”

“He doesn’t need legal access if he forces us to sign something.”

My phone received a message.

It contained a photograph of Lily sitting in the back seat of a car.

She looked frightened but unharmed.

A second message followed.

Bring the original trust documents to Robert’s lake house. No police.

The house Diane had purchased with stolen money.

Detective Hayes began organizing a tactical team.

“We’ll monitor you the entire way.”

The message demanded Emily come alone.

She refused.

“I’ll do it,” I said.

“No. Victor chose me because he thinks I’m weak.”

“You aren’t going alone.”

“I won’t be alone. The police will be close.”

Grace made copies of the trust documents.

Detectives placed a tracking device inside the folder.

Emily wore a small recorder beneath her shirt.

Before she left, we watched the hotel footage again.

Noah stood beside me.

His face was filled with guilt.

“I should’ve stopped her.”

“You’re eleven.”

“I knew it wasn’t Grace.”

“You realized too late. That isn’t your fault.”

“She called Lily ‘sweetheart.’ Grace always calls her Miss Lily.”

That detail might have saved us if he had heard it sooner.

But none of this belonged on Noah’s shoulders.

I took his face between my hands.

“You tried to protect your sister. You have done that every day. Now let the adults protect both of you.”

At the lake house, Emily carried the folder through the front door.

Police watched through a camera hidden in her coat.

Lily sat at the dining table.

Rachel stood beside her.

Victor waited near the windows.

He looked tired, not powerful.

That made him more dangerous.

“Mommy!” Lily cried.

Emily fought the urge to run to her.

“I’m here, baby.”

Victor held up a hand.

“The documents.”

“Let Lily come to me first.”

“No.”

“You already have the trust money.”

“Diane stole part of it. Then the bank froze the rest.”

“So this is about money.”

“This is about survival.”

“You kidnapped a four-year-old.”

“I borrowed leverage.”

Rachel looked uncomfortable.

“She’s scared, Victor.”

“Then keep her calm.”

Emily placed the folder on the table.

“What do you want me to sign?”

Victor produced several documents.

One released him and Diane from liability.

Another stated the fundraiser had been authorized.

The third appointed Rachel as Lily’s temporary guardian.

Emily stared at him.

“You think a judge will accept this?”

“Not by itself.”

He placed a small camera on the table.

“You will record a statement saying Ethan is violent and you asked us to help you escape.”

“No.”

Victor’s face hardened.

“Then Lily leaves with Rachel.”

“Where?”

“You won’t know.”

Lily began crying.

Rachel crouched beside her.

“It’s okay.”

“No, it isn’t,” Lily said.

Rachel froze.

Lily looked at Emily.

“Grandma said bad people make you practice lies.”

Emily’s heart broke.

Victor grabbed the documents.

“Sign.”

Emily picked up the pen.

Police waited for the signal.

But Victor had placed a radio detector beside the door.

A red light began flashing.

He looked at Emily’s coat.

“You brought them.”

He ripped the hidden camera free.

Outside, Detective Hayes ordered the team forward.

Victor grabbed Lily.

Rachel stepped between him and the door.

“Let her go.”

“Move.”

“This wasn’t the plan.”

“The plan changed.”

“You said no one would get hurt.”

Victor shoved Rachel aside.

Emily lunged for Lily.

Victor dragged the child toward the back door.

Then the lights went out.

Noah had remembered something.

The lake house’s security system was still linked to a smart-home account found on Robert’s flash drive.

From the police command vehicle, he had asked an officer to let him access it.

When he saw Victor reach for Lily, Noah cut the power and locked the electronic back door.

Victor pulled the handle.

It would not open.

Lily kicked backward and slipped from his grip.

Emily grabbed her.

They fell behind the kitchen island.

Police broke through the front door.

Rachel dropped to the floor.

Victor ran upstairs.

Detective Hayes followed.

He climbed through a bedroom window onto the roof.

The lake wind pushed against him.

Officers surrounded the house.

There was nowhere to go.

Victor shouted that he had evidence against Diane, Colin, and Dr. Ross.

He offered names.

Accounts.

Everything.

Detective Hayes ordered him to come down.

He refused until he saw Rachel being placed in handcuffs.

Then he realized no one was going to rescue him.

He climbed back inside and surrendered.

Emily carried Lily out of the house.

I ran to them.

Lily reached for me.

“Daddy!”

I held both of them.

Noah came from the command vehicle with an officer.

Lily saw him and began crying harder.

“You turned off the lights.”

Noah nodded.

“I locked the bad door too.”

She wrapped her arms around him.

“My hero.”

Victor was led from the house.

As he passed Melissa, he stopped.

“Your mother destroyed us.”

Melissa looked at him.

“You helped her.”

“She promised we’d have enough money to start again.”

“You could have started again without stealing a child.”

Victor lowered his head.

The police car took him away.

Rachel agreed to cooperate immediately.

She told investigators Diane had contacted Victor months earlier.

The guardianship plan had been his idea.

Dr. Ross had been Colin’s connection.

Every person in the conspiracy believed Diane would protect them.

Diane believed they would take the blame for her.

Now they were all turning on one another.

The final shock came that afternoon.

Investigators recovered a recording from Victor’s phone.

In it, Diane discussed Robert’s medication.

“If he stays confused, he can’t testify,” she said.

Victor asked, “What if the dosage causes permanent damage?”

Diane replied, “Then he won’t testify at all.”

Emily listened once.

Then she refused to hear it again.

Robert listened too.

He closed his eyes.

A single tear moved down his cheek.

He had loved Diane for forty-two years.

That love did not disappear because the truth was ugly.

It simply became another wound.

The prosecutor charged Diane with attempted murder.

Her attorney asked for bail.

The judge denied it.

As guards led Diane from the courtroom, she looked toward Emily and Melissa.

Neither daughter looked away.

Diane stopped.

“You need me,” she said.

Emily shook her head.

“No, Mom.”

Melissa took her sister’s hand.

“We needed a mother.”

May you like

The guards led Diane through the door.

This time, she did not have an answer.
