Chapter 1

I caught my husband kissing my sister in our kitchen on my birthday—but the second document I found in his briefcase made the affair look almost harmless.
I had just turned thirty-six.
Ryan told me he was working late, so my sister, Melissa, offered to help set up dinner at our house outside Dallas.
I came home early carrying my own birthday cake.
The kitchen lights were on.
Then I heard Melissa laugh.
I walked around the corner and saw my husband kissing her beside the island.
The cake slipped from my hands.
Ryan jumped backward.
“Emily, wait.”
Melissa covered her mouth.
I stared at the two people I trusted most.
“How long?”
“It isn’t what you think,” Ryan said.
I actually laughed.
“You’re kissing my sister on my birthday.”
Melissa started crying.
“Please let me explain.”
Then Ryan grabbed my arm.
“Not here.”
I pulled away.
“Why? Afraid the kids will hear what their father did?”
His face changed.
That was when I noticed his briefcase open beneath a chair.
Several papers had spilled onto the floor.
Ryan moved toward them.
Too late.
I picked up the first document.
It was a hotel reservation under his name and Melissa’s.
Three nights.
One room.
Dated six months earlier.
“You’ve been doing this for six months?”
Neither answered.
Then another paper slid from the briefcase.
Ryan lunged for it.
I stepped back and unfolded it.
It wasn’t a hotel receipt.
It was a copy of my late father’s trust.
My name was printed across the first page.
So was Melissa’s.
But beside my signature was a handwritten amendment I had never seen.
I looked at Ryan.
“What is this?”
Melissa whispered, “Emily, put it down.”
I kept reading.
According to the document, if my marriage ended under certain circumstances, control of nearly everything my father left me would transfer temporarily to another family trustee.
Melissa.
My hands started shaking.
“You weren’t just sleeping with my husband.”
Ryan went silent.
Then I turned the page.
There was another signature beneath the amendment.
My mother’s.
And beside it was a date from three years before Ryan and I had even met.
I looked at Melissa.
Her face had gone white.
“What did Mom know?”
Melissa began backing away.

Then Ryan whispered the sentence that destroyed everything I thought I knew about my family.
“Emily… Melissa isn’t actually your sister.”
