Chapter 15

Police tracked Ryan’s phone to the lake house.
Detective Ruiz wanted me to stay at the hospital.
I refused.
Lily was awake and stable.
Grace agreed to remain with both children.
Before I left, Noah hugged me.
“Bring Grandma back.”
I wanted to promise him.
But promises had become dangerous things.
“I’ll do everything I can.”
Melissa came with me.
Neither of us spoke during the drive.
The sun was setting when police surrounded the property.
The lake house stood behind tall trees.
Ryan’s rental car was parked outside.
Mom’s sedan was near the water.
Ruiz ordered us to wait behind the police line.
Then a gunshot echoed from inside.
Melissa grabbed my hand.
Officers rushed forward.
A second sound followed.
Glass breaking.
Then Ryan appeared on the back deck, pulling Mom with him.
He held a small digital recorder in one hand.
Blood ran from a cut on his forehead, but he remained on his feet.
Mom was crying.
Ryan dragged her toward a motorboat tied to the dock.
Police shouted for him to stop.
He pressed the recorder against the side of the boat.
“One move and this goes into the lake!”
Ruiz kept her weapon lowered.
“Let Diane go.”
“She isn’t a hostage,” Ryan shouted. “She called me.”
Mom looked toward us.
“I’m sorry, Emily.”
I stepped past the police barrier.
Ruiz caught my arm.
“Stay back.”
Ryan saw me.
“Bring me the original trust.”
“It’s in police custody.”
“Then make them release my father.”
“Caleb murdered Martin.”
“You don’t know what my father did.”
“I know what you did to Lily.”
His face tightened.
“That was a mistake.”
“You gave a child my medication.”
“I needed a positive test.”
“You needed my daughter to look poisoned so you could blame me.”
“I gave her less than one pill.”
Melissa shouted from behind me.
“She could have died.”
Ryan looked at her.
“You betrayed me.”
“You lied about everything.”
“I told you Emily stole your inheritance.”
“She didn’t.”
“Her father stole your life.”
“Our father.”
Ryan flinched at the words.
Melissa moved closer.
“Thomas was my father. Emily is my sister. You are nothing to me.”
His hand tightened around the recorder.
“You didn’t say that in the hotel.”
Melissa’s face burned with shame, but she didn’t step back.
“No. I said I loved you. And I will regret it for the rest of my life.”
Mom suddenly drove her elbow into Ryan’s chest.
He released her.
The recorder fell onto the dock.
Ryan reached for it.
I broke free from Ruiz and ran.
Melissa reached it first.
Ryan caught her by the hair.
I grabbed his arm.
The three of us crashed against the railing.
The recorder slid toward the water.
Mom dropped to her knees and caught it inches from the edge.
Police pulled Ryan away.
This time, he didn’t escape.
Ruiz handcuffed him herself.
He looked at me while officers led him past.
“You still don’t know who Lily’s father is.”
The words followed me all the way back to the house.
Mom sat on the sofa with a blanket around her shoulders.
The bullet had gone into the ceiling.
Ryan fired it during an argument.
No one had been hit.
Ruiz placed the recorder on the table.
“Before we listen, Diane needs to explain how she got it.”
Mom stared at her hands.
“Thomas gave it to me the night before his accident.”
“Why hide it?”
“Because it proved I helped move company money.”
“You stole twelve million dollars,” I said.
“I moved it.”
“What’s the difference?”
“I used the accounts to pay Caleb.”
Melissa stood.
“You paid the man who killed my mother?”
“He threatened to take you.”
“I was an adult for most of those seventeen years.”
“He threatened Emily too. Then her children.”
“You didn’t protect us,” I said. “You gave him power.”
Mom began crying.
“I know.”
Ruiz started the recording.
Dad’s voice filled the room.
My name is Thomas Hale. If anything happens to me, Caleb Mercer is responsible.
There was a pause.
Then he continued.
Eighteen years ago, I confronted Caleb at Vera’s house. He struck me. A lamp broke during the fight. Fire spread across the curtains. I tried to reach Vera, but Caleb stopped me.
Melissa covered her mouth.
Dad’s voice shook.
Caleb told me Vera had already escaped. I believed him until I saw her body carried out.
Mom closed her eyes.
The recording continued.
I helped Diane hide financial transfers because Caleb threatened both girls. That was my crime. I let fear turn into silence. If Melissa ever hears this, I need her to know Vera tried to expose him. She died protecting her daughter.
Melissa sobbed.
I held her before I could stop myself.
She collapsed against me.
For a few seconds, betrayal disappeared.
We were children again.
Two sisters clinging to each other during a storm.
The recording had one final section.
Ryan Mercer has begun working at a Dallas investment firm under another name. He has contacted Diane. If he approaches either daughter, he must be stopped.
The date was nine years earlier.
Ryan had already been watching us before Dad died.
I turned to Mom.
“You knew his face.”
“No. Thomas only had the name Ryan Mercer. Your husband called himself Ryan Bennett.”
“But six months ago, you learned the truth.”
“Yes.”
“And you didn’t tell me.”
“He had photographs of me transferring money. He said I would spend the rest of my life in prison. He said you would lose the company and the children.”
“So you let him destroy me instead.”
“I thought I could control him.”
“You were wrong.”
“I know.”
The next morning, the court canceled Ryan’s protective order.
I received temporary sole custody.
He was charged with child endangerment, fraud, kidnapping, and violating the emergency court order.
Caleb remained in custody for Martin’s murder.
Victor Lang was arrested for money laundering.
For one brief hour, I believed the nightmare was ending.
Then the DNA results arrived.
The counselor asked me to meet her privately.
I brought Samuel.
She placed three reports on the table.
“The first confirms that you are Lily’s biological mother.”
I nodded.
“The second excludes Ryan Bennett as her biological father.”
The room went silent.
“That can’t be right.”
“We tested twice.”
I gripped the edge of the table.
“I have never been with anyone else.”
Samuel looked at the dates.
“Could the samples have been switched?”
“We verified them.”
“Then explain it.”
The counselor hesitated.
“There is another possibility. Was Lily conceived through fertility treatment?”
“Yes.”
Ryan and I had struggled for years.
We used an embryo created at a private Dallas clinic.
The counselor folded her hands.
“Then the wrong genetic material may have been used.”
I remembered the clinic.
Ryan had chosen it.
He managed every appointment.
“Can you identify the biological father?”
“Not without a comparison sample.”
Samuel’s phone rang.
He answered.
His expression changed.
“What is it?” I asked.
He ended the call.
“The fertility clinic burned last night.”
I stared at him.
“All the records?”
“Destroyed.”
My phone buzzed.
An unknown number had sent a photograph.
It showed Lily as a newborn.
A man stood beside her hospital bassinet.
His face was turned toward the camera.
It was Caleb Mercer.
