Amazed

Chapter 3

The hospital immediately contacted a child-abuse specialist.

I sat beside Lily’s bed while nurses collected blood samples. She was exhausted, but every time her eyes closed, she jerked awake and reached for me.

“I’m here,” I whispered. “Mommy isn’t leaving.”

A detective named Sarah Cole arrived just after midnight.

She spoke softly and never pressured Lily. She showed her simple picture cards and asked whether anyone had given her medicine.

Lily touched the picture of a blue pill.

“Grandma candy.”

“Did Daddy see?” Detective Cole asked.

Lily nodded.

“Daddy said be good.”

I turned away because I could not let my daughter see me break.

Ryan had known.

Maybe he had not placed the pill in her mouth, but he had watched his mother do it. He had watched Lily cry. He had watched her being dragged into the basement.

And he had chosen silence.

The laboratory results came back before dawn.

The blue substance contained a prescription sleep medication. The dose was not immediately fatal, but it was dangerous for a child Lily’s size.

Diane’s name was on the prescription.

Detective Cole’s expression tightened.

“This changes the investigation.”

“Will they release her?” I asked.

“Not tonight.”

I should have felt relieved.

Instead, fear settled deeper inside me.

Diane had always escaped consequences. She manipulated people until they doubted what they had witnessed with their own eyes.

My phone began ringing.

Ryan’s relatives sent message after message.

You destroyed the family.

Diane was only helping.

Ryan could lose his career because of you.

Not one of them asked if Lily was safe.

Then a message arrived from Ryan’s younger sister, Megan.

I know what Mom did. I have proof. Please don’t trust anyone.

Before I could respond, Megan called.

She was whispering.

“Emma, are you alone?”

“Yes.”

“I need to see you.”

“Tell me what you know.”

“Not on the phone. Ryan has access to our family account. He can see some of my records.”

My anger exploded.

“Your brother drugged my daughter.”

“I know.”

Her voice broke.

“And Lily wasn’t the first child Mom treated this way.”

The line went dead.

I tried calling back, but Megan’s phone had been turned off.

Detective Cole traced the call to a gas station twenty miles away. An officer searched the area, but Megan was already gone.

At sunrise, a social worker brought emergency custody documents. Ryan was temporarily barred from contacting Lily. Diane was ordered to remain five hundred feet away from both of us.

I signed every page.

Around noon, Lily finally ate.

She took three careful bites of applesauce, then pushed the bowl toward me.

“For Mommy,” she said.

My heart shattered.

“There’s more food, sweetheart.”

She stared at the bowl.

“Grandma say food finish.”

“No,” I told her. “You will always have enough.”

She began crying.

So did I.

That afternoon, Ryan called from the county jail.

I almost refused the call.

Then I answered because I wanted to hear whether there was any humanity left in the man I had married.

“Emma,” he said, “you have to fix this.”

“Fix what?”

“Tell the police Mom made a mistake.”

“A mistake is forgetting to buy milk. She locked Lily in a basement and gave her sleeping pills.”

“You don’t understand my mother.”

“You’re right. I don’t understand monsters.”

He became quiet.

Then his voice changed.

“You assaulted me and Mom. If you continue with this, I’ll tell them you’re unstable.”

I laughed, but there was no humor in it.

“The officers saw Lily. They saw the basement.”

“My family will testify against you.”

“You mean the people eating steak while my daughter picked food from the floor?”

Ryan lowered his voice.

“You won’t win against all of us.”

The call ended.

A nurse entered moments later carrying an envelope.

“A woman left this at the front desk for you.”

There was no name on it.

Inside was a storage-unit key and a handwritten address.

Below the address, Megan had written six words.

Everything Ryan hid is inside Unit 214.
