Amazed

Chapter 4

I gave the key to Detective Cole.

She told me not to visit the storage unit alone. By evening, she had obtained permission to search it as part of the investigation.

Lily remained in the hospital with my mother while I accompanied the detective.

Unit 214 was registered under Ryan’s business name.

When the metal door rolled upward, I expected old furniture or boxes.

Instead, I found a secret life.

A desk stood against the back wall. Beside it were filing cabinets, a locked medicine box, and a computer. Shelves held family photographs, legal papers, and recordings from security cameras inside our house.

I recognized our kitchen.

Our hallway.

Lily’s bedroom.

“He recorded us?” I asked.

Detective Cole did not answer immediately.

She called the digital evidence team.

Inside the top drawer of the desk, officers found documents showing that Ryan had opened credit cards in my name. He had taken money from our joint savings account and transferred it to Diane.

The total was more than eighty thousand dollars.

Then they found a folder labeled CUSTODY.

Inside was a petition Ryan had not yet filed.

It described me as violent, emotionally unstable, and dangerous to Lily. Several statements were already signed by his relatives.

The dates showed that Ryan and Diane had begun planning to take Lily from me months earlier.

“They wanted me gone,” I whispered.

Detective Cole pointed to another document.

It was a life insurance policy.

Ryan had recently increased the amount payable upon my death.

Diane was listed as the secondary beneficiary.

My skin went cold.

A technician turned on the computer and discovered hundreds of video files.

One recording had been made two weeks earlier.

Ryan and Diane were sitting in our kitchen after I had gone to bed.

“She’s getting suspicious,” Ryan said.

“Then stop acting frightened,” Diane replied. “Once we establish that Emma is unstable, the court will give you custody.”

“What if Lily talks?”

“She’s two. Nobody listens to a two-year-old.”

Ryan rubbed his face.

“I don’t like locking her downstairs.”

“Then control your wife. Emma needs to learn that this family belongs to me.”

The recording ended.

I wanted to tear the computer apart.

Instead, I forced myself to remain still while the officers copied every file.

A vehicle suddenly stopped outside.

Detective Cole drew her weapon.

“Stay behind me.”

The storage-unit door was still open when Megan stepped from an old sedan.

Her cheek was bruised.

Blood stained the sleeve of her sweater.

“Oh my God,” I said. “What happened?”

Megan looked over her shoulder.

“My uncle found me.”

Diane’s brother, Frank, had been at the dinner. He was the man who had stepped toward me when I warned everyone not to touch me.

Megan said Frank had followed her after she sent me the message. He demanded the storage key and accused her of betraying the family.

She escaped only after striking him with a lamp.

Detective Cole called an ambulance and issued an alert for Frank.

While we waited, Megan began to cry.

“I should have helped sooner.”

“What did you mean when you said Lily wasn’t the first child?”

Megan sat on the concrete floor.

“When Ryan and I were children, Mom did the same things to me. She locked me in closets. She withheld food. She gave me medicine when I cried.”

“Did she hurt Ryan?”

“Sometimes. But then he learned how to stay safe.”

“How?”

Megan looked toward the computer.

“He helped her.”

The words struck harder than a slap.

Megan opened her purse and removed a tiny memory card.

“I copied this before Frank found me.”

“What’s on it?”

“A recording from the night before you came home.”

Detective Cole inserted the card into a secure device.

The video showed Diane holding a blue pill beside Lily’s mouth.

Ryan stood behind her.

Lily turned her face away.

Then Ryan held his daughter’s arms while Diane forced the pill between her lips.

I could barely watch.

Afterward, Ryan carried Lily toward the basement.

Before the recording ended, he looked directly into the camera.

He knew it was there.

And he smiled.
