Chapter 12

I went to the cemetery with Harris, Tony, and six officers.
Bruno walked beside me, silent.
My mother’s grave was open.
The earth was wet.
Her coffin lid had been pried loose.
Inside, beneath the satin lining, we found a metal box.
Victor had missed it.
Or wanted me to find it.
The box had no lock.
Only my mother’s initials.
Inside was the ledger.
Not my father’s.
My mother’s.
Every page was written in her careful hand.
Dates.
Payments.
Names.
But it was not a crime ledger.
It was a map of survivors.
Women Victor had hurt.
Children he had hidden.
Officers he had paid.
Doctors he had used.
Judges he had bought.
And at the center of it all was one name circled in red.
Evelyn Hart.
I did not know the name.
Harris did.
His jaw tightened.
“She’s a family court judge.”
Tony looked confused.
“What does family court have to do with Victor?”
Harris flipped pages.
“Adoptions. Custody transfers. Sealed records.”
My stomach turned.
“Elena’s adoption.”
“And maybe dozens more.”
My mother had not just hidden Elena.
She had been collecting proof.
At the bottom of the box was one flash drive.
Tony plugged it into his laptop in the car.
A video opened.
My mother sat in the sewing room.
Older.
Thin.
But her eyes were fierce.
“If you are watching this, then I failed to keep the child hidden.”
Her voice broke.
“Dante, I know you think power means making men afraid. But real power is protecting someone who cannot repay you.”
I closed my eyes.
She continued.
“Victor killed Nico. Marco helped him. Judge Hart sealed the birth record. Father Paul moved the papers. Rafael took Maria. I could not save Maria.”
A tear slipped down my face before I could stop it.
“But I saved Elena. For a while.”
The video ended with one final sentence.
“Do not become the monster you hunt.”
No one spoke.
Then Harris’s phone rang.
He listened.
His face changed.
“Judge Hart just signed an emergency order removing Elena from Luis and Rosa’s custody.”
I stared at him.
“On what grounds?”
“Fraudulent adoption.”
Tony cursed.
Harris lowered the phone.
“Child Protective Services is on the way to the hospital.”
I looked at the open grave.
Victor had not missed the box.

He had led us here.
So Judge Hart could take Elena while we were gone.
