Chapter 18

The verdict came on a rainy Thursday.
Victor Salerno was found guilty on every count.
Kidnapping.
Attempted murder.
Conspiracy.
Witness tampering.
Murder of Maria Vasquez.
Murder of Nico Bellandi.
Judge Hart was convicted too.
Father Paul lost his collar, his freedom, and every false prayer he had hidden behind.
Rafael and Marco took plea deals, but neither would see freedom while Elena was still young enough to fear shadows.
Luis cried when the verdict was read.
Rosa covered Elena’s ears when reporters outside shouted Victor’s name.
I stood behind them, close enough to protect, far enough not to crowd.
Victor turned before they led him away.
His eyes found mine.
“You think this makes you clean?”
“No.”
“Then what?”
I looked at Elena.
She was holding Luis’s hand and Rosa’s hand at the same time.
“It makes her safe.”
Victor laughed once.
Then the officers pulled him through the door.
That night, I went to my mother’s grave.
The soil had been repaired.
The stone cleaned.
I stood there without guards.
Only Bruno.
“I found her,” I said.
The wind moved through the trees.
“I found what you hid. I found what you feared. I found what I became.”
My voice broke.
“I’m trying to be better.”
Bruno leaned against my leg.
I took my father’s old ring from my pocket.
The one every Bellandi boss wore.
Gold.
Heavy.
Cursed.
I buried it at the foot of my mother’s grave.
Then I walked away.
The next morning, I signed documents creating the Maria and Nico Foundation for Missing Children and Coerced Families.
Luis refused to let me name it after Elena.
“She gets to be a child,” he said.
He was right.
So Elena became exactly that.
A child.
Not a symbol.
Not evidence.
Not bloodline.
Not leverage.
A child who liked purple shoes and horse drawings and safe bedtime stories.
One evening, she asked me to visit.
I arrived at the restaurant after closing.
She handed me a drawing.
It showed me, Bruno, Nico the little dog, and her family standing under a huge yellow sun.
Above my head she had written one word.
Friend.
I stared at it too long.
Elena tilted her head.
“Do you like it?”
May you like
I swallowed hard.
“Yes.”
