Amazed

Chapter 10

The trial preparations began with old wounds.

My father’s lawyer testified from a hospital bed.

He admitted Don Torrisi created the trust for Luke before he died.

He admitted documents were stolen.

He admitted Milena pressured him after my father’s funeral.

“Why didn’t you tell Angelo?” Detective Harris asked.

The old man cried.

“Carlo said my grandchildren would vanish.”

Fear again.

Always fear.

Carlo’s men led investigators to the hospice nurse.

She confessed Isabella had been drugged for years.

Not constantly.

Enough to keep her weak.

Enough to make escape hard.

Enough to make any story she told sound like illness.

The funeral director admitted there had been no body in the Newark grave.

He took cash.

He looked ashamed.

Luke watched none of this.

I kept him away from every hearing I could.

But children know when adults are building a case around their pain.

One afternoon, he asked, “Will they show Mom’s tapes in court?”

“Maybe.”

“Will people hear her scared?”

“Yes.”

He swallowed.

“I don’t want them to.”

“I know.”

“But if they don’t, Carlo says she lied?”

“Yes.”

He sat quietly.

Then said, “Use them.”

“You’re sure?”

“No.”

That answer was brave.

Not certainty.

Sacrifice.

I called Matteo.

“Prepare the tapes.”

Milena tried to negotiate.

She offered to return part of Luke’s stolen trust if I dropped the abuse charges.

I laughed for the first time in days.

It was not a happy sound.

Matteo replied for me.

No.

Then she offered information about Carlo’s offshore accounts.

No.

Then she sent a letter to Luke.

I intercepted it.

Inside, she wrote:

Your mother suffered because she wanted what belonged to me.

I handed it to Detective Harris.

Evidence.

Everything she touched became evidence.

Grace found Luke later crying over the old photograph.

He let her hold him.

Not me.

That hurt.

It also made sense.

Grace had been the bridge Isabella built.

I was the shore Luke did not yet trust.

So I waited.

A father can wait.

I was done being only a boss.
