Amazed

Chapter 11

Lucia confessed before the trial.

She came to my study with red eyes and a folder pressed to her chest.

“I failed Isabella.”

I looked at her.

“How?”

“She wrote me once.”

The room went still.

“When?”

“After Luke was born.”

She placed the letter on my desk.

The paper was thin, worn from years of being unfolded and refolded.

Isabella had written:

Lucia, please tell Angelo I did not take Milena’s money willingly. Please tell him the baby has his eyes.

I stared at my sister.

“You had this.”

She began to cry.

“I was twenty. Carlo found out before I could bring it to you. He told me Isabella was using the child to destroy your marriage. Milena said the baby wasn’t yours. I was scared.”

“You let me marry a lie.”

“I know.”

“You let my son grow up hungry.”

She sobbed.

“I know.”

I stood and walked to the window.

If I looked at her too long, I might say something I could not take back.

Behind me, she whispered, “I’ll testify.”

I closed my eyes.

“Good.”

“Will you ever forgive me?”

“I don’t know.”

She accepted that.

It was the first honest thing anyone in my family had done in years.

When Luke learned Lucia had hidden a letter, he asked to see her.

I warned him.

“You don’t have to.”

“I want to ask her.”

They met in the garden with Grace nearby.

I watched from the terrace.

Luke stood straight.

Small against the stone fountain.

Lucia knelt.

He asked, “Did my mom ask you for help?”

Lucia cried.

“Yes.”

“Did you help?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“I was a coward.”

Luke stared at her.

“My mom died waiting.”

Lucia covered her mouth.

“I’m sorry.”

Luke nodded.

Then walked away.

No forgiveness.

No cruelty.

Just truth placed exactly where it belonged.

That night, he sat beside me at dinner for the first time.

Not close.

But beside me.

Rosa served pasta.

He looked at the plate.

Then at me.

I said, “No one takes food from you here.”

He picked up his fork.

“I know.”

May you like

The words were small.

They changed the room.
