Amazed

Chapter 4

Nobody slept.

Robert’s guards searched every room, hallway, and entrance.

They found a service door unlocked near the kitchen.

Robert insisted it had been secured earlier.

One guard discovered that fourteen minutes of security footage had been erased.

Only three people knew the system password.

Robert.

His security chief.

And Diane.

“I changed that password after the divorce,” Robert said.

“Your ex-wife may have found the new one,” Naomi replied.

“Or someone gave it to her.”

The security chief stiffened.

Robert noticed.

“So did I.

“What aren’t you telling me, Marcus?”

Marcus had worked for Robert for eleven years.

He was the man Lily had handed the phone to after Robert entered our house.

He looked toward me, then toward Lily.

“Mrs. Carter came here last week.”

“Diane?” Robert asked.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“She said you had asked her to collect old family documents.”

“I never asked her to do that.”

Marcus lowered his eyes.

“She knew the code to the side gate.”

Robert stepped closer.

“And you let her inside?”

“She was your wife for thirty-two years.”

“Ex-wife.”

“I made a mistake.”

Robert dismissed him immediately.

Marcus surrendered his access card and left without arguing.

But as he passed me, he whispered, “Don’t trust the attorney.”

Naomi heard him.

“So now I’m part of the conspiracy?”

Marcus kept walking.

Robert ordered two other guards to accompany him off the property.

At sunrise, Naomi arranged for Lily and me to move to a secure hotel.

I refused.

“If Ryan expects us to hide, he controls the next move.”

“You have an eight-year-old to protect.”

“That is exactly why I need to know what is inside that storage unit.”

Robert shook his head.

“You’re not going.”

“It concerns my husband and my child.”

“It may be dangerous.”

“So is waiting for Ryan to decide what happens next.”

Naomi agreed to let me go if police were notified and security entered first.

We left Lily with a retired detective Naomi trusted.

Her name was Helen Brooks.

Lily liked her immediately because Helen carried peppermint candy and spoke to her like an adult.

Before I left, Lily hugged me.

“Come back fast.”

“I will.”

“Promise?”

I almost said yes.

Then I remembered how many promises adults had broken around her.

“I will do everything I can.”

She pressed the brass key into my palm.

“Daddy was scared of this.”

“So we’re going to find out why.”

Evergreen Self Storage stood beside an industrial road outside the city.

The green paint was faded.

A metal tree hung above the office.

Police met us there.

The facility manager confirmed that Diane Carter paid for unit 317 in cash.

She had visited four days earlier.

Ryan had visited the previous night.

“That means he knows Lily took the key,” I said.

“Then why didn’t he empty the unit?” Naomi asked.

The manager answered.

“He tried. We changed the locks last month after an attempted break-in. His key didn’t work.”

Lily had taken the old key.

The manager opened the unit with a master lock.

A guard raised the metal door.

Inside were six cardboard boxes, two suitcases, and a locked metal cabinet.

No furniture.

No photographs.

Nothing that looked important.

Then I saw my name written on one box.

EMILY.

My heart began pounding.

Naomi put on gloves.

“Let the officers open it.”

The first box contained copies of my bank statements.

Medical records.

Photographs of me taking Lily to school.

Receipts from restaurants where I had met friends.

Printed emails between me and my sister.

Ryan had documented my life for years.

A second folder was labeled INCIDENTS.

Inside were photographs of a broken plate, a dent in the bedroom wall, and a bruise on Ryan’s shoulder.

Every page included a typed explanation.

Emily became violent after drinking wine.

Emily threatened self-harm during an argument.

Emily struck Ryan while Lily was present.

None of it was true.

I read one page after another.

He had built a false history of abuse and instability.

Naomi took the folder from me.

“This is why we came.”

“He planned to take Lily.”

“He planned to make sure no one believed you.”

One officer opened the first suitcase.

It contained cash.

Stacks of hundred-dollar bills.

Beneath them were two passports.

One displayed Ryan’s photograph under a different name.

The second displayed Lily’s photograph.

Her name had been changed to Lily Reynolds.

My knees weakened.

“He was going to take her.”

Robert caught my arm.

Naomi examined the passport.

“This was issued four months ago.”

“How could he get one without me?”

“It may be fraudulent.”

The officer opened the metal cabinet.

Inside were three phones and a silver bracelet.

Robert picked up the bracelet before anyone could stop him.

“Claire wore this.”

His voice cracked.

“She never took it off.”

Naomi looked at him sharply.

“How do you know?”

“I gave it to her.”

The answer hit me harder than I expected.

“You gave your son’s fiancée jewelry?”

Robert stared at the bracelet.

“She wasn’t only Ryan’s fiancée.”

Silence filled the unit.

I stepped back.

“What does that mean?”

Robert closed his fist around the bracelet.

“Claire was my daughter.”

For a moment, I thought I had misunderstood.

“Your daughter?”

“My biological daughter.”

Naomi stared at him.

“Did Ryan know?”

“No.”

“You allowed your daughter to become engaged to your son?”

“They weren’t related.”

Robert’s voice shook.

“Ryan isn’t my biological child.”

The boxes around us seemed to tilt.

Robert continued before I could speak.

“Diane was pregnant when I married her. I knew. I raised Ryan as mine. Claire was born from a relationship I had years later.”

“You cheated on Diane?”

“Yes.”

“And hid a daughter from your family?”

“Claire’s mother didn’t want money or attention. She asked me to stay away. After she died, Claire contacted me.”

“How old was Claire when she met Ryan?”

“Twenty-four. Neither of them knew the truth at first.”

“At first?” Naomi repeated.

Robert gripped the bracelet tighter.

“I told Claire after they became engaged. I asked her to end it without revealing why.”

“Why didn’t you tell Ryan?”

“Because Diane would have used it to destroy Claire.”

I felt sick.

“You built this entire family on secrets.”

“I know.”

“No, you keep saying that. But every new truth is worse than the last.”

One of the phones inside the cabinet suddenly rang.

Everyone jumped.

The screen showed no number.

Naomi put it on speaker.

“Hello?”

A woman breathed on the other end.

Then she spoke.

“Robert?”

He dropped the bracelet.

“Claire?”

The woman began crying.

Robert grabbed the phone.

“Claire, where are you?”

“You shouldn’t have opened the unit.”

“Are you safe?”

“No one is safe now.”

“Tell me where you are.”

“I can’t.”

“Claire, I have searched for you for ten years.”

“You stopped searching after six months.”

Robert closed his eyes.

“I thought you were dead.”

“You let Ryan believe that too.”

A loud bang sounded through the phone.

Claire gasped.

“Someone’s here.”

“Claire!”

The call ended.

One of the officers tried to trace it.

Naomi moved toward the open door.

“We need to leave.”

The metal door slammed down before we could reach it.

Darkness swallowed the unit.

May you like

Someone had locked us inside.

Then smoke began sliding beneath the door.
