Chapter 9

Thomas Vale arrived in Chicago the next afternoon.
He entered the Carter Foundation building surrounded by attorneys and private security.
The press described him as a billionaire investor coming to rescue a collapsing company.
They did not know he was Ryan’s father.
They did not know Diane had planned the collapse.
The emergency board meeting began at six.
Robert remained in custody.
Diane remained in jail.
Ryan remained missing.
Naomi asked me to attend as Lily’s trustee.
I left Lily with Claire and two police officers at the shelter.
Before I went, she handed me the small brass key.
“You keep it now.”
I closed my hand around it.
“You started all of this with one brave choice.”
“I was scared.”
“Brave people are scared. They just move anyway.”
At the foundation building, board members stared as I entered.
Some looked sympathetic.
Others looked angry.
To them, I was not an abused wife trying to protect her daughter.
I was a legal complication standing between them and a profitable sale.
Thomas Vale sat at the end of the table.
He was in his early sixties, silver-haired and confident.
Ryan had his eyes.
That resemblance made my skin crawl.
Thomas smiled.
“Mrs. Carter. I’m sorry we’re meeting under painful circumstances.”
“You created those circumstances.”
Several directors shifted uncomfortably.
Thomas folded his hands.
“I’m offering stability.”
“You’re buying a company your son helped weaken.”
His smile didn’t change.
“I have no son.”
“We both know that isn’t true.”
Silence spread across the room.
One director demanded an explanation.
I placed Ryan’s birth certificate on the table.
Thomas barely looked at it.
“Biology does not create a relationship.”
“Did you know Diane was pregnant when she married Robert?”
“Yes.”
“Did you contact Ryan?”
“No.”
“Then why have you been transferring money to companies controlled by him?”
Thomas leaned back.
“Those allegations are unproven.”
Naomi entered carrying a sealed evidence envelope.
“Not anymore.”
Two financial investigators followed her.
The board erupted.
Thomas’s attorney stood.
“This meeting is private.”
“Not when it is being used to complete a fraudulent sale,” Naomi replied.
The investigators presented a court order freezing the transaction.
Thomas finally lost his smile.
“You have no authority over my company.”
“It isn’t your company,” I said.
“And it won’t become yours.”
A door opened behind us.
Ryan entered.
He had shaved his beard and changed his hair, but I recognized him immediately.
So did everyone else.
Police moved forward.
Ryan raised both hands.
“I’m here to surrender.”
He looked at Thomas.
“And to tell the truth.”
Thomas stared at him without emotion.
Ryan’s face tightened.
“Say something.”
“You should speak to your attorney.”
“You’re my father.”
“According to a document.”
Diane had spent years telling Ryan that Thomas wanted him.
That they would take the company together.
Now Thomas looked at him like an inconvenience.
Ryan laughed once.
“You used us.”
Thomas stood.
“I entered a legal business negotiation.”
“You paid Mom to destroy Robert.”
“I paid consultants.”
“You promised me half.”
“I promised your mother a fee.”
Ryan turned toward me.
His eyes were wild.
“She lied to me.”
I felt no sympathy.
“You kidnapped Lily.”
“I never wanted her hurt.”
“You told her she would forget me.”
“I was angry.”
“That is always your answer.”
“I can fix this.”
“No.”
“I’ll testify against Mom and Thomas.”
“You can tell the truth. That doesn’t erase what you did.”
Police approached him.
Ryan pulled a flash drive from his pocket.
“This has everything. Recordings. Transfers. Messages.”
He placed it on the table.
“Diane ordered Marcus to frame Naomi. Thomas paid Marcus to set the fire at the storage unit. I can prove it.”
“Where is Marcus?” an investigator asked.
Ryan looked at Thomas.
“He took him.”
Thomas’s attorney objected.
Police ordered everyone to remain in the room.
Thomas appeared bored.
Then the lights went out.
Emergency alarms began sounding.
Someone shouted.
A table overturned.
Naomi grabbed my arm.
“Stay down.”
In the darkness, a hand closed around my wrist.
I smelled Ryan’s cologne.
He pulled me toward the side door.
“Let go.”
“Come with me if you want Marcus alive.”
I struck his arm.
He tightened his grip.
“Emily, listen to me.”
“No.”
“You need my fingerprint to open the archive cabinet.”
“Police can open it.”
“They’ll find an empty cabinet.”
“What did you do?”
“I moved the records.”
“Where?”
“To the roof.”
The emergency lights turned on.
Ryan was inches from me.
A bruise darkened one side of his face.
His eyes were desperate.
“Thomas has a helicopter coming. He’ll take the records and kill Marcus.”
Police shouted Ryan’s name.
He released me and ran through the side door.
I told Naomi what he had said.
Officers rushed toward the roof.
Thomas was no longer in the boardroom.
We followed the police into the stairwell.
On the top floor, smoke filled the hallway.
The archive room was burning.
Sprinklers sprayed water from the ceiling.
Cabinet twelve stood open and empty.
The roof door slammed above us.
We climbed.
Cold wind struck my face as I emerged.
A helicopter hovered near the landing pad.
Thomas stood beside it holding a case.
Marcus knelt several feet away with his hands bound.
Ryan faced Thomas.
“You promised we would leave together.”
Thomas raised his voice over the rotors.
“You became a liability.”
“My whole life, Mom told me Robert stole your family.”
“Your mother says whatever serves her.”
Ryan took another step.
Thomas’s security guard blocked him.
Police poured onto the roof.
The helicopter lifted away before Thomas could reach it.
He was trapped.
Marcus dropped to the ground.
Officers surrounded Thomas and his guard.
Ryan stood near the edge of the roof.
“Don’t move!” an officer shouted.
Ryan looked at me.
“This is your fault.”
“No,” I said. “For once, look at your own choices.”
“My father hated me.”
“Robert protected you from every consequence.”
“My mother used me.”
“You still chose to hurt us.”
“You took Lily.”
“I saved her.”
His face twisted.
He rushed toward me.
An officer tackled him before he reached me.
Ryan fought, screaming my name.
Police forced his hands behind his back.
The brass key slipped from my pocket and struck the ground near his face.
He stared at it.
One tiny key had opened everything he tried to bury.
As officers lifted him, he stopped struggling.
“What did Lily tell the judge?” he asked.
I looked at him.
“The truth.”
For the first time, Ryan seemed afraid of his own daughter’s voice.
Investigators opened Thomas’s case.
It did not contain the financial records.
It contained cash and a passport.
Ryan laughed from across the roof.
“You thought I’d let him take the evidence?”
“Where is it?” I asked.
He smiled.
“With the only person my mother never considered dangerous.”
My phone rang.
Claire was calling.
I answered.
She was crying so hard I could barely understand her.
“Emily, someone entered the shelter.”
My heart stopped.
“Where is Lily?”
“She’s safe. The police stopped him.”
“Who was it?”
May you like
Claire drew a shaking breath.
“Robert.”
