Amazed

Chapter 14

Life went on.

Diane's death didn't change anything.

Not really.

We were still happy.

Still building our lives.

Still helping others.

But there was a lightness now.

A sense that the last chapter of our old story had finally been closed.

And a new one was beginning.

That year, we celebrated our tenth wedding anniversary.

The second time around.

We renewed our vows.

In the same backyard.

With the same people.

But this time, our children were there.

Little Sarah was ten now.

She was the flower girl again.

David was seven.

He was the ring bearer.

It was perfect.

Ryan's vows were even more beautiful than they had been the first time.

"Emily," he said. "Ten years ago, I stood before you and promised to love you, to honor you, to protect you. And I failed. I failed you in the worst way possible. But you gave me a second chance. You believed in me when I didn't believe in myself. You helped me become the man I am today. The man who will never fail you again. The man who will spend the rest of his life making you happy. I love you, Emily. More than words can say. And I will love you until the day I die."

My vows were simple.

"Ryan," I said. "We've been through hell and back. We've been broken. We've been lost. But we found our way back to each other. And we built something beautiful. Something real. Something worth fighting for. I love you. I'm proud of you. And I can't wait to spend the next ten years, and the next ten after that, building our life together."

When we kissed, our children cheered.

It was perfect.

That fall, Sarah had a baby.

A little girl.

They named her Emily.

After me.

I cried when they told me.

Holding little Emily in my arms, I felt like everything had come full circle.

The woman who had once been my rival.

The woman who had been through the same hell as me.

Was now my sister.

My best friend.

And she'd named her daughter after me.

It was the greatest honor I'd ever received.

Life was good.

Really good.

But then, just when we thought everything was perfect, we got another surprise.

I was pregnant again.

Ryan and I were shocked.

We hadn't planned on having more children.

But we were overjoyed.

The children were excited.

Little Sarah couldn't wait to be a big sister again.

David was thrilled to have another sibling.

The pregnancy was easy.

And nine months later, we welcomed another little girl into the world.

We named her Grace.

Because that's what we'd been given.

Grace.

A second chance.

A beautiful life.

Grace was the sweetest baby.

Always smiling.

Always happy.

She completed our family.

We were five now.

Ryan.

Me.

Sarah.

David.

Grace.

And we were happy.

Truly, deeply happy.

One night, after the kids were asleep, Ryan and I were sitting on the porch swing.

Just like we always did.

We were watching the stars.

Holding hands.

"Do you ever think about what would have happened if things had been different?" Ryan asked.

"What do you mean?" I said.

"If Mom had never... if she'd been different. If I'd stood up for you that night. If we'd never gone through any of it."

I thought about it.

"Sometimes," I said. "But then I think about what we have now. About the people we've become. About the work we do. About our children. And I wouldn't change a thing. Because all of it led us here. To this moment. To this life."

Ryan squeezed my hand.

"Me too," he said. "I wouldn't change a thing."

We sat there in silence.

Just enjoying each other's company.

Enjoying the peace.

The quiet.

The love.

I thought about the woman I'd been five years ago.

Scared.

Alone.

Broken.

Sitting on a kitchen floor, wondering if anyone would ever help her.

And I thought about the woman I was now.

Strong.

Confident.

Loved.

Surrounded by family and friends.

Making a difference in the world.

I'd come so far.

We'd all come so far.

And the best part was, the journey wasn't over.

There were still adventures to be had.

Children to raise.

Lives to change.

May you like

Love to share.

And I couldn't wait.
