Amazed

Chapter 3

The emergency room was a blur of noise and activity.

Doctors and nurses moved around me, asking questions, taking my blood pressure, cutting off my jeans to get to my leg.

Dad stayed right beside me the whole time.

He held my hand.

He didn't let go.

Not even when the nurse tried to shoo him out for the X-rays.

"I'm not leaving her," he said simply.

The nurse didn't argue.

The X-ray confirmed what we already knew.

A clean break of the tibia.

The doctor said it would require surgery to set properly.

"Six to eight weeks in a cast," he said. "Then physical therapy. You'll make a full recovery."

Six to eight weeks.

I'd be dependent on other people.

Helpless.

The thought made my stomach turn.

But then I looked at Dad.

And I knew I wasn't alone.

They gave me pain medication.

The world went soft around the edges.

I drifted in and out of consciousness.

At one point, I woke up and Dad was talking to someone on the phone.

His voice was low.

Angry.

"...yes, broken leg. Surgery in the morning... No, she's not going back there... I don't care what he says. He made his choice... Yes, thank you. We'll need that... Okay. Goodbye."

He hung up and turned to me.

He smiled when he saw I was awake.

"How are you feeling, kiddo?"

"Drugged," I mumbled. "Who was that?"

"An old friend," he said. "He's a lawyer. Good one. Specializes in domestic violence cases."

I blinked.

"A lawyer?"

Dad nodded.

"Diane is going to pay for what she did, Emily. And Ryan... well, Ryan's going to learn that actions have consequences."

I lay there for a moment, processing.

"Dad," I said quietly. "What did you mean earlier? About Diane's first daughter-in-law?"

Dad's jaw tightened.

He sat down in the chair beside my bed.

He took my hand again.

"I didn't want to tell you like this," he said. "I was still gathering proof. I didn't want to say anything unless I was sure."

"Sure about what?"

He took a deep breath.

"Before you married Ryan, he was engaged to someone else. A girl named Sarah."

I frowned.

"Ryan said that was just a high school thing. That it didn't mean anything."

"It was more than that," Dad said. "They were together for three years. Engaged for one. They bought a house together. And then... suddenly, it was over. Sarah left town. No one heard from her again."

I stared at him.

Ryan had never told me any of this.

"Diane told everyone Sarah had cheated on Ryan," Dad continued. "That she'd run off with another man. Broke his heart. But I found out differently. About six months ago, I ran into Sarah's mother at the grocery store. We got to talking. And she told me what really happened."

My heart was racing now.

"What happened, Dad?"

"Sarah didn't leave because she fell in love with someone else," he said. "She left because she was afraid for her life. Diane had been abusing her emotionally for years. And then one day, it turned physical. Diane pushed her down the stairs. Sarah broke her wrist and two ribs. She told Ryan what happened. And he..."

Dad trailed off.

He looked away.

"He what?" I whispered.

"He told Sarah she must have tripped," Dad said. "That his mother would never do something like that. That she was imagining things. So Sarah packed her bags and left in the middle of the night. She never came back."

The room started to spin.

It was like looking in a mirror.

The same pattern.

The same abuse.

The same betrayal.

Ryan had done this before.

He'd chosen his mother over the woman he claimed to love.

And then he'd lied to me about it.

For five years, I'd thought I was the only one.

I'd thought if I just tried harder, if I was just a better wife, things would get better.

But I wasn't the first.

And if I hadn't called my father that night, I probably wouldn't have been the last.

"Why didn't you tell me?" I asked.

My voice sounded small.

Broken.

"Because I wasn't sure," Dad said. "Sarah's mother didn't have proof. Just her daughter's word. And I knew how much you loved Ryan. I didn't want to destroy your marriage unless I had something solid. So I started looking. I hired a private investigator. I was getting close to finding Sarah herself. And then you called me tonight."

He squeezed my hand.

"I'm so sorry, Emily. I should have said something sooner. I should have protected you."

Tears spilled down my cheeks.

"It's not your fault," I said. "I'm the one who married him. I'm the one who stayed."

"You stayed because you loved him," Dad said gently. "Because you wanted to believe the best of him. That's not weakness. That's who you are."

He wiped my tears with his thumb.

"But you don't have to be that person anymore. Not with them. You hear me?"

I nodded.

A nurse came in then.

"Time for your surgery, honey. We're going to take you down now."

Dad kissed my forehead.

"I'll be right here when you wake up. I promise."

They wheeled me out of the room.

As I went down the hallway, the drugs making me drowsy, I thought about Sarah.

The girl who came before me.

The girl who had been through the same hell.

And I thought about Ryan.

How he'd stood there and watched while his mother broke my leg.

How he'd told me I'd pushed her too far.

Something hardened inside me.

The surgery would fix my leg.

But I was going to fix the rest of it myself.

Diane was going to jail.

May you like

Ryan was going to learn what it meant to lose everything.

And I was going to get my life back.
