My mother-in-law slapped me in front of the entire family and hissed, “You got pregnant before the wedding, and you expect me to call you my daughter-in-law?”
I was seven months pregnant when Ethan took me to his parents’ home outside Nashville for Sunday dinner.
We had married quietly three months earlier.
His mother, Diane, had never forgiven us.
The moment I walked inside, she stared at my stomach.
“So everyone can see your shame now,” she said.
Ethan immediately stepped between us.
“Mom, don’t start.”
Diane laughed.
“I’m not the one who embarrassed this family.”
I tried to stay calm.
“Our baby is not an embarrassment.”
Her expression hardened.
“You trapped my son.”
“No, I didn’t.”
“You were pregnant before he put a ring on your finger.”
Ethan slammed his hand on the table.
“I chose to marry Emily.”
Diane ignored him and turned to the relatives watching us.
“Girls like her know exactly how to secure a husband.”
My eyes filled with tears, but I refused to look down.
“I love your son.”
She walked closer.
“Love?”
Then she pointed at my stomach.
“That is not love. That is insurance.”
I stood up.
“Don’t ever talk about my baby like that again.”
Diane suddenly slapped me across the face.
Everyone froze.
Ethan shouted, “Mom!”
But she grabbed my shoulder.
“You have no right to threaten me in my own house!”
I pulled away and covered my stomach instinctively.
That only made her angrier.
She raised her hand again.
Before she could strike me, Ethan caught her wrist.
“Touch my wife again and we’re done.”
Diane stared at him in disbelief.
Then his father, Robert, quietly stood from the end of the table.
“Actually, Diane,” he said, “there’s something you should know before you judge how that baby was conceived.”
The room went silent.
Diane slowly turned toward him.
Robert opened a drawer and pulled out an old hospital envelope.
