Amazed

Chapter 3

Diane’s lawyer was named Mark Holloway.

He had visited our house three times.

Ryan always told me he was helping Diane with her estate.

Lily remembered him because he had asked strange questions.

“Did your mom ever forget to pick you up?”

“Does she get angry for no reason?”

“Would you rather live with your father?”

She thought he was simply being friendly.

Now every question sounded like preparation.

Detective Torres recognized his name immediately.

“Holloway signed the guardianship petition,” she said. “He claimed he personally witnessed Claire approve it.”

“He was in the house during the attack,” Dad replied. “He photographed her defending herself.”

“If we prove that, he could be part of the conspiracy.”

Torres asked Lily to describe him.

Lily did more than that.

She remembered where he went after taking the picture.

“There’s a door upstairs beside Grandma’s room,” she said. “He went in there.”

We returned to the house with Detective Torres and a search warrant.

The room Lily described had always been locked.

Ryan called it storage.

Inside, police found a desk, a printer, and a scanner.

There were blank medical forms.

There were practice copies of my signature.

There was also a small camera connected to our home security system.

Ryan had deleted recordings from the main account.

The hidden device had saved copies.

Detective Torres played the footage.

We watched Diane mix crushed pills into my tea.

We watched Ryan move my belongings and later accuse me of losing them.

We watched Holloway hand Ryan the insurance documents.

Then we saw the hallway attack.

The camera captured everything.

Diane grabbing my throat.

Ryan refusing to help.

Lily entering.

Me kicking Diane away.

My slap.

Dad’s arrival.

The lie was destroyed.

But one recording was missing.

The file jumped from Tuesday night to Thursday morning.

“What happened on Wednesday?” Torres asked.

Lily looked at me.

“That was when Grandma took me to the doctor.”

My heart stopped.

“What doctor?”

“She said it was a school checkup.”

I had never approved an appointment.

Torres searched the desk and found an envelope marked with Lily’s name.

Inside was a report claiming my daughter suffered anxiety because of my unpredictable behavior.

The report recommended that Lily be placed with Ryan.

The doctor’s name was Dr. Samuel Price.

Dad read the address.

“This isn’t a hospital. It’s a private office across town.”

Torres called the number.

It had been disconnected.

Then we heard a car outside.

Ryan pulled into the driveway.

He walked toward the house as if nothing had happened.

When he saw the police vehicle, he stopped.

Detective Torres stepped onto the porch.

“You shouldn’t be here.”

“It’s my home.”

“It is also an active crime scene.”

Ryan looked past her at me.

“Claire, let’s talk privately.”

“No.”

“You’re being manipulated by your father.”

Dad moved forward, but I raised my hand.

I wanted Ryan to speak.

I wanted to hear how much more he would reveal.

“You stole my inheritance,” I said.

“My mother handled the finances.”

“You signed the transfers.”

“You weren’t thinking clearly.”

“Because you were drugging me?”

His eyes flickered toward Torres.

That tiny reaction answered the question.

Ryan changed his tone.

“I made mistakes. But everything I did was for Lily.”

“You taught her to lie about me.”

“I prepared her for the truth.”

Lily stepped out of the house.

“The truth is that you let Grandma hurt Mom.”

Ryan’s face hardened.

“You need to come home with me.”

“I am home with Mom.”

“You don’t get to choose.”

He reached for her.

Detective Torres blocked him.

“Leave now.”

Ryan backed toward his car.

As he opened the door, he looked at me.

“You think your father can protect you forever?”

Then he drove away.

Torres immediately called an officer to follow him.

She feared he might destroy more evidence.

Minutes later, she received a message.

Ryan had not gone to a bank or another house.

He had driven to Lily’s school.

Dad looked at the clock.

School had ended hours ago.

“He knows she’s here,” I said. “Why would he go there?”

Lily suddenly grabbed my arm.

“My emergency file.”

“What about it?”

“Grandma made the school add another person who could pick me up.”

“Who?”

Lily swallowed hard.

“Dr. Price.”

At that exact moment, the school principal called.

A man claiming to be Lily’s doctor had entered the office.

He was asking for her schedule.

When staff questioned him, he ran.

Police chased him but lost him behind the building.

Detective Torres showed the principal a photograph.

The principal identified Dr. Samuel Price.

But when Torres searched the medical licensing database, she found no doctor by that name.

The photograph belonged to someone else.

A man who had been convicted of fraud eight years earlier.
