Chapter 4

Ryan had always told me Diane was an only child.
That lie was older than our marriage.
Daniel Mercer had served four years in prison for financial fraud, identity theft, and falsifying medical documents.
After his release, he disappeared.
Now his photograph was in Lily’s school file.
His signature was on the report calling me unstable.
And he knew enough about my daughter to approach her school.
Detective Torres issued an alert for him.
She also told us not to return to Dad’s house.
“If Daniel knows about Robert, he may know where he lives.”
The police moved Lily and me to a hotel under different names.
Dad refused to stay behind.
“I’m not leaving them.”
Torres warned him that Daniel might be dangerous.
Dad’s answer was simple.
“So am I when someone threatens my family.”
That evening, my attorney, Maya Bennett, met us at the hotel.
She had already filed for an emergency protection order and temporary sole custody.
“Ryan’s attorney is fighting it,” she said.
“Holloway?”
“No. Holloway disappeared this morning.”
Maya opened her laptop.
“He emptied his office and missed a court hearing. The police are searching for him.”
Diane’s bail request had been denied.
Ryan, however, remained free.
The custody hearing would happen the next morning.
“He will use the photograph,” I said.
“We have the security video.”
“The police haven’t released it.”
Maya smiled for the first time.
“They gave me permission to show it to the judge.”
In court, Ryan wore a dark suit and the expression of a wounded husband.
He told the judge I had turned Lily against him.
He claimed my father had attacked him without reason.
Then his new lawyer displayed the photograph of me slapping Diane.
The judge looked at me.
“Mrs. Carter, did you strike your mother-in-law?”
“Yes.”
Ryan smiled.
Then Maya played the full recording.
The courtroom became silent.
Everyone watched Diane choke me.
Everyone watched Ryan stand there.
Everyone heard him tell me to sign the papers.
When the video ended, the judge stared at Ryan.
“You presented a photograph that removed the events leading to the strike.”
“My former lawyer handled that evidence,” Ryan said.
“Your former lawyer was present in the video.”
Ryan’s confidence collapsed.
The judge granted me sole temporary custody.
Ryan was forbidden from contacting Lily or coming within five hundred feet of us.
He objected.
“She’s my daughter!”
The judge leaned forward.
“Then you should have protected her mother.”
Outside the courtroom, reporters waited.
Someone had leaked the story.
Ryan covered his face and rushed away.
I thought we had won something important.
Then Maya’s phone rang.
Her expression changed as she listened.
“What happened?” I asked.
She lowered the phone.
“Your father’s bank called. Someone tried to access the family trust this morning.”
Dad frowned.
“That trust requires my signature.”
“They had your signature.”
The request had been denied because the bank manager knew Dad personally.
But the forged paperwork identified me as mentally incompetent and Ryan as controller of my inheritance.
They were still trying to take the money.
We returned to the hotel with a police escort.
The door to our room was slightly open.
Dad pushed Lily and me behind him.
The officer entered first.
No one was inside.
Nothing appeared stolen.
Then Lily noticed her backpack on the bed.
“I left that in the car.”
Inside the backpack was a photograph of me sleeping.
The date printed at the bottom was from two nights earlier.
It had been taken at Dad’s house.
On the back, someone had written:
Guardians don’t need permission.
The police moved us again.
This time, they placed us in a protected apartment.
Lily tried to be brave, but she woke from nightmares twice that night.
At dawn, I heard her whispering in the kitchen.
She was talking to someone on the apartment phone.
I rushed in and took the receiver.
“Who is this?”
A man laughed softly.
“Claire, you married into the wrong family.”
Daniel.
My skin went cold.
“How did you get this number?”
“You should ask the person standing beside you.”
I turned.
Dad stood in the doorway.
His face had lost all color.
Daniel continued.
“Robert knows exactly why Diane chose Ryan for you.”
The line went dead.
I looked at my father.
“What did he mean?”
Dad sat slowly at the table.
May you like
For the first time in my life, he could not meet my eyes.
“Your marriage wasn’t an accident,” he said. “Ryan’s family found you because of me.”
