Years passed.

Jack grew taller than Lucy.

Then taller than me.

He kept the broken padlock in a shadow box at the bakery.

Not at home.

Home was for peace.

The bakery was for testimony.

When asked about it, he said, “That’s the lock I broke to find my mom.”

People cried.

He hated when they cried.

Then secretly gave them napkins.

Lucy dated once.

I pretended to be normal about it.

Jack laughed at me.

“Dad, you look like you swallowed a lemon.”

“I am supportive.”

“You are weird.”

He was right.

But I learned.

Lucy deserved happiness that did not require my comfort.

I dated too, slowly.

A teacher named Hannah.

Kind.

Patient.

She asked Jack if he was okay with her joining dinner.

He said, “Depends. Do you believe kids?”

She answered, “Yes.”

He said, “Then bring garlic bread.”

High approval.

Grace rebuilt her life.

Evan wrote apologies from prison.

Jack chose not to read them.

Lucy supported that.

So did I.
