Amazed

Chapter 7

The investigation went backward.

Seven months.

Then one year.

Then farther.

Diane had entered our lives before the divorce was final.

She catered a school fundraiser.

She brought Jack cookies.

She told me I looked exhausted.

She told Lucy she looked unstable.

Lucy remembered every step now.

“She wanted access,” Lucy told Detective Harris. “At first I thought she wanted Mark. Then I realized she wanted Jack’s trust.”

Diane learned about the trust from a custody file.

She befriended a clerk.

Paid him.

Got sealed details.

Then she started pushing me to seek primary custody.

I hated admitting how easily she guided me.

She never said, “Take Jack from Lucy.”

She said, “A stable home matters.”

She said, “Mothers who disappear emotionally can disappear physically.”

Then Lucy did disappear.

Because Diane made her.

The accidental call had saved her.

Diane’s restaurant landline redialed my house after Lucy knocked a phone off a prep shelf.

Jack answered.

His mother breathed into the line.

That was all he needed.

I asked Detective Harris if I could see the storage room.

He said no.

Then later, yes, with supervision.

I stood in that dark space where Lucy had carved days into cardboard.

Mark will come, one line said.

Then, later.

Jack will know I tried.

I put my hand over my face.

Detective Harris said nothing.

Good men know when silence is mercy.

I went home and wrote Jack a letter.

Not asking forgiveness.

Only truth.

I failed you by believing a lie that was easier for me than your fear.

I gave it to his therapist.

Jack could read it when ready.
