Chapter 11

The child abuse trial came first.
The prosecutor began with the cage.
The backyard footage played on a large screen.
Noah’s voice filled the courtroom.
Daddy… help me.
I gripped the bench.
Margaret sobbed beside Thomas.
Grace stared straight ahead, jaw tight.
Vanessa looked down.
Not from shame.
From calculation.
Then came Noah’s recorded interview.
Only the jury saw his face.
We heard audio.
“She said Mommy was mud now.”
A juror cried.
I closed my eyes.
Vanessa’s lawyer argued discipline.
The prosecutor replayed the cage latch clicking shut.
That sound ended the argument.
Mason testified against his sister.
His voice shook.
But he told the truth.
He described the shed from childhood.
Vanessa’s jealousy.
Her debts.
Her obsession with becoming Mrs. Hale.
Then Paul testified.
He explained the trust plan.
Residential treatment.
Trustee removal.
Marriage deadline.
By the third day, Vanessa’s soft pink courtroom outfits looked like costumes from a play no one believed anymore.
I testified last.
Her lawyer asked if I struck Vanessa when I discovered Noah.
“No.”
“You wanted to?”
“Yes.”
The courtroom went still.
I looked at the jury.
“But my son needed arms, not more violence.”
That was the truth.

The best part of me had barely survived that day.
