Chapter 12

The verdict came quickly.

Guilty.

Child endangerment.

Guilty.

False imprisonment.

Guilty.

Emotional abuse.

Guilty.

Fraud conspiracy.

Attempted trust theft.

Evidence fabrication.

Vanessa’s face went blank.

At sentencing, I spoke with Noah’s teddy bear in my hand.

“Noah was five,” I said. “He should have been choosing bedtime stories. Instead, he had to reach through cage bars for the last gift his mother left him.”

Vanessa looked away.

“You tried to make grief a crime. You tried to make love for a dead mother look like sickness. You tried to turn a child’s fear into paperwork.”

My voice broke.

“But you failed because Noah called for help. Because Laura protected him. Because truth was sewn into a bear you threw in the mud.”

The judge sentenced Vanessa to prison.

Years.

Real years.

No contact with Noah.

No contact with me.

No contact through anyone.

The fraud case continued.

The Laura case waited.

When I told Noah Vanessa was gone, he asked, “No more cage?”

“No more cage.”

“No more outside?”

“Not unless we are playing.”

He thought about that.

“Can Mommy Bear get cleaned?”

“Yes.”

We sent the bear to a textile restorer.

Noah insisted the mud stain on one paw stay.

“For remembering,” he said.

I understood.
