Chapter 1

She Dragged a Little Girl Across Our Hotel Lobby—Then the Child Grabbed My Apron and Whispered Six Words

I was carrying a tray through the lobby of a luxury Chicago hotel when I heard a little girl scream, “Please, somebody help me!”

A woman in her fifties was gripping the child by the arm and pulling her across the marble floor.

“Give me back my necklace!” the woman shouted.

The girl looked eight or nine, and tears were running down her face.

“I didn’t take anything!”

Guests stopped walking, but nobody stepped forward.

The woman tightened her grip.

“You were standing beside my purse ten minutes ago.”

“I was looking for my mom!”

I set my tray down and moved toward them.

“Ma’am, please let go of her.”

The woman stared at my uniform and snapped, “Stay out of this.”

The little girl suddenly reached for my apron.

“Please,” she whispered. “Don’t let her take me upstairs.”

That changed everything.

I stepped between them.

The woman’s face turned red.

“She stole a diamond necklace worth sixty thousand dollars.”

“Then hotel security can handle it,” I said.

The girl shook her head frantically.

“I never touched her purse.”

The woman pointed toward the elevators.

“My husband is waiting upstairs. We’ll deal with her privately.”

Something about those words made my stomach tighten.

I called security.

The woman immediately tried pulling the girl away again.

“Cancel that call.”

“Why?” I asked.

She froze.

Two security officers rushed into the lobby.

The woman suddenly changed her story.

“She’s my granddaughter.”

The little girl looked at me in terror.

“She’s not.”

Everyone around us went silent.

Then our hotel manager came running from the front desk with a tablet in his hand.

“We checked the lobby cameras,” he said.

The woman crossed her arms. “Good. Then you saw her steal it.”

My manager stared at her for several seconds.

“No, ma’am.”

He turned the tablet toward security.

“We saw who actually took your necklace.”

The woman’s face went completely white.

But before he could say the name, the little girl grabbed my hand and whispered, “That’s not why she wants me upstairs.”
