Amazed

Chapter 3

Marcus moved first.

“Stop!”

The man turned toward the side exit.

Two guests jumped out of the way.

A luggage cart crashed over as he shoved past a bellman.

The second security officer, Luis, cut across the lobby.

The man reached the revolving door.

Luis grabbed the back of his jacket.

The man twisted free.

For one second, I saw something metallic in his hand.

Marcus saw it too.

“Hands where I can see them!”

The lobby erupted in screams.

I pulled Mia behind a marble column.

“Stay with me.”

She was shaking uncontrollably.

The woman shouted, “Daniel!”

So she did know him.

Daniel looked toward her.

That hesitation cost him.

Luis tackled him around the waist.

They hit the floor.

The metal object slid across the marble.

Not a weapon.

A hotel master key card.

Mr. Bennett stared at it.

“How did he get that?”

Daniel struggled.

Marcus helped pin him.

“Stop resisting.”

“You don’t know what you’re doing!”

Daniel’s expensive suit tore at the shoulder.

“I’m a guest here.”

“A guest with a stolen staff access card?”

“I found it.”

Marcus snapped plastic restraints around his wrists.

The woman shouted, “You can’t detain us!”

Daniel looked at her.

“Victoria, shut up.”

So her name was Victoria.

Mia whispered, “That’s him.”

I crouched.

“The man who took your mom upstairs?”

She nodded.

“His name is Daniel?”

Mia swallowed.

“Mom called him Mr. Ross.”

Mr. Bennett heard.

“Daniel Ross?”

His face drained.

I looked at him.

“You know him?”

“He’s staying in the Sterling Suite.”

The most expensive suite in the hotel.

Nearly eight thousand dollars a night.

“Who is he?”

Mr. Bennett looked toward Victoria.

“He checked in under a corporate reservation connected to Whitmore Development.”

Victoria’s jaw tightened.

The name meant something even to me.

Whitmore Development had towers, hotels, office buildings, luxury apartments.

Their name was everywhere in Chicago.

Marcus looked at Victoria.

“Are you Victoria Whitmore?”

She said nothing.

Mr. Bennett answered for her.

“Yes.”

A murmur spread through the lobby.

Victoria Whitmore.

Wife of billionaire developer Richard Whitmore.

Her face appeared in charity magazines.

Her husband’s company sponsored hospitals, museums, schools.

She wasn’t just wealthy.

She was powerful.

And now she had been caught dragging a terrified child through our lobby.

Victoria straightened her jacket.

“Now that you know who I am, perhaps we can stop this embarrassment.”

Marcus stared at her.

“No.”

Her confidence cracked.

“My husband will destroy this hotel.”

Mr. Bennett surprised me.

“Then he can start tomorrow.”

He pointed toward the security office.

“Today, you’re staying here until police arrive.”

Victoria’s eyes burned.

Daniel looked at Mia.

His gaze dropped to the key again.

Mia noticed.

She shoved the key beneath her sweater.

Daniel said quietly, “The girl doesn’t understand what she has.”

I felt my pulse jump.

Marcus heard him.

“What does she have?”

Daniel smiled.

“Nothing.”

“You just said she doesn’t understand it.”

Daniel looked away.

Victoria hissed, “Stop talking.”

Marcus radioed upstairs.

“Control, I need the Sterling Suite secured immediately.”

The reply came fast.

“We already sent two officers.”

“Status?”

Silence.

Then static.

“Control?”

Another pause.

“Officer Reed isn’t answering.”

Mr. Bennett grabbed his phone.

“What about Officer Mason?”

“No response.”

Marcus’s expression changed.

“Seal the elevators.”

Daniel began laughing.

Mia grabbed my arm.

“Why is he laughing?”

I didn’t know.

But Victoria did.

She looked almost relieved.

Marcus pulled Daniel upright.

“What’s upstairs?”

Daniel shrugged.

“Go look.”

Marcus stared at him.

“You want us to.”

The laughter stopped.

That was the moment Marcus understood.

“It’s a distraction.”

Daniel said nothing.

Marcus turned to Mr. Bennett.

“Where else can someone exit the presidential floor?”

“Service stairs. Freight elevator. Private stairwell connected to the conference level.”

Marcus spoke into his radio.

“Cover every exit from thirty-two. Nobody leaves.”

I looked at Mia.

“Did your mother say anything else about the key?”

She shook her head.

“Just keep it safe.”

“Did she show you what she found?”

“No.”

“Did she have anything with her?”

Mia thought.

“A little black thing.”

“What kind of thing?”

“She put it in her pocket.”

“A phone?”

“No.”

She held her fingers about two inches apart.

“Like this.”

A memory card.

A USB drive.

Something small enough to hide.

Mr. Bennett heard us.

“Caroline might have copied something.”

Daniel’s face changed.

Barely.

But enough.

Mia saw it too.

“She did.”

Daniel looked at her.

“What?”

“My mom said she made a copy.”

Victoria snapped, “Mia!”

Marcus turned.

“How do you know her name?”

Victoria shut her mouth.

Too late again.

Mia whispered, “Mom told me she copied it twice.”

Daniel’s face became gray.

I leaned toward her.

“Copied what?”

“She didn’t say.”

“Where did she put the copies?”

“I don’t know.”

Daniel suddenly stopped struggling.

That frightened me more than when he had run.

He looked at Victoria.

“They don’t have it.”

Victoria’s eyes narrowed.

Daniel said, “The key.”

Marcus grabbed his shoulder.

“What about it?”

Daniel ignored him.

“Mia.”

I stepped between them.

“Don’t talk to her.”

Daniel smiled at me.

“You have no idea what that key opens.”

“Then tell us.”

He looked at me.

“No.”

Police sirens sounded outside.

For the first time, Victoria appeared genuinely scared.

Two Chicago police vehicles pulled up in front of the hotel.

Officers entered quickly.

Marcus began explaining.

A detective arrived minutes later.

Detective Elena Ruiz.

She was calm, direct, and unimpressed by expensive names.

Victoria immediately said, “I want my attorney.”

Ruiz nodded.

“You’ll have one.”

Daniel said the same.

Ruiz turned to me.

“You’re the employee who intervened?”

“Yes.”

“Name?”

“Grace Miller.”

“What did the child say to you?”

I repeated everything.

Ruiz crouched near Mia but kept several feet between them.

“Mia, I’m Detective Ruiz. You’re not in trouble.”

Mia clung to my apron.

Ruiz noticed.

“Would you like Grace to stay?”

“Yes.”

Ruiz looked at me.

“If you’re comfortable.”

“I’m not leaving her.”

Mia’s grip tightened.

Ruiz asked only a few questions.

Not enough to overwhelm her.

Then she turned to Mr. Bennett.

“We need access to all camera footage.”

“You’ll have it.”

“And the Sterling Suite.”

Mr. Bennett hesitated.

“Our officers upstairs haven’t responded.”

Ruiz immediately radioed additional police units.

Victoria watched silently.

Daniel watched the elevators.

Ruiz caught that.

“What are you expecting to happen?”

Daniel smiled.

“Nothing.”

The elevator chimed.

Everyone tensed.

The doors opened.

A hotel security officer stumbled out.

Officer Reed.

Blood ran from a cut above his eyebrow.

“Help!”

Marcus rushed forward.

“Where’s Mason?”

Reed struggled to breathe.

“Thirty-two.”

“What happened?”

“Someone attacked us from behind.”

“Who?”

“I didn’t see.”

“What about the housekeeper?”

Reed looked confused.

“What housekeeper?”

“Caroline Carter.”

Reed shook his head.

“No one was in the suite.”

Mia started crying.

“She was there!”

Reed looked at Mr. Bennett.

“The suite was empty.”

Ruiz stepped closer.

“Empty?”

“Completely.”

“Guests?”

“Gone.”

“Officer Mason?”

Reed looked terrified.

“I woke up alone.”

Marcus stared at Daniel.

Daniel’s smile returned.

Ruiz noticed.

She walked toward him.

“Where did they go?”

Daniel said nothing.

Ruiz leaned closer.

“Whatever you think you’re protecting, you’re already in handcuffs.”

Daniel looked at Victoria.

Victoria looked away.

Ruiz tried another direction.

“Did Richard Whitmore order this?”

Victoria’s head snapped toward her.

Daniel went still.

Ruiz had hit something.

“What does my husband have to do with this?” Victoria demanded.

Ruiz looked at her.

“You tell me.”

Victoria’s confidence cracked.

“He isn’t here.”

“Where is he?”

“New York.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Ruiz saw it.

“No, he isn’t.”

Victoria looked at Daniel.

“What?”

Daniel said nothing.

Ruiz smiled slightly.

“Mr. Ross knows where your husband is.”

Victoria stepped toward him.

“Daniel?”

Marcus stopped her.

Victoria stared.

“Where is Richard?”

Daniel looked down.

Mia suddenly tugged my sleeve.

“Grace.”

“What?”

“The man upstairs.”

“Which man?”

“The one my mom was scared of.”

She pointed toward a massive hotel advertisement displayed near the concierge desk.

It showed Richard Whitmore at a charity opening.

Silver hair.

Perfect suit.

Confident smile.

Mia pointed straight at him.

“That’s him.”

Victoria stared at the child.

“No.”

Mia nodded.

“He was in the room.”

Victoria’s face emptied.

“No.”

Ruiz turned toward her.

“Mrs. Whitmore?”

Victoria backed away.

“My husband is in New York.”

Mia looked at her.

“He told my mom she’d never see me again.”

Victoria whispered, “You’re lying.”

Then a phone began ringing.

Not mine.

Not Mr. Bennett’s.

The sound came from inside Daniel’s suit jacket.

Marcus removed the phone.

The screen showed one name.

Richard.

Ruiz answered.

She said nothing.

A man’s voice came through the speaker.

“Daniel, tell me you found the girl.”

Nobody moved.

Ruiz looked directly at Victoria.

The voice continued.

May you like

“And tell Victoria if she failed again, she’s on her own.”

Victoria’s knees nearly gave out.
