Amazed

Chapter 1

She thought one fake story would destroy an innocent woman.

She forgot the house was recording everything.

I came home that afternoon expecting a quiet dinner with my daughter.

Instead, I found two police cars outside my gate.

My stomach dropped.

I ran through the front door and heard Vanessa crying before I even reached the living room.

“She attacked Lily,” she told the officers. “The nanny lost control and hit her.”

Elena stood near the wall with tears running down her face.

Her hands were shaking.

“Mr. Carter, please,” she said. “I would never hurt Lily.”

Vanessa pointed at her.

“She’s lying!”

Then I saw my daughter.

Lily was sitting on the couch, holding one side of her face.

She was seven years old.

Her eyes were red.

Her whole body looked frozen.

I dropped beside her.

“Sweetheart, what happened?”

Vanessa answered before Lily could speak.

“Elena slapped her because Lily refused to clean her room.”

“That is not true,” Elena whispered.

Vanessa turned toward the officers.

“See? She won’t even admit it.”

One officer stepped toward Elena.

“Ma’am, we need you to come with us while we sort this out.”

Elena looked at me.

There was fear in her eyes, but there was something else too.

Betrayal.

She had worked for me for almost five years.

She had helped raise Lily after my wife Claire died.

She had been there through nightmares, fevers, school plays, birthdays, and every terrible morning when Lily woke up asking why her mother was still gone.

And now everyone expected me to believe she had suddenly attacked my child.

I looked at Lily again.

“Baby, did Elena hit you?”

Vanessa stiffened.

Lily looked at her.

That was the first thing I noticed.

My daughter did not look at Elena.

She looked at Vanessa.

Fear flashed across her face.

Vanessa smiled at her.

It was a small smile.

A warning.

Then Lily reached for my hand.

“Daddy,” she whispered.

“I’m here.”

Her fingers tightened around mine.

“Check the camera.”

The entire room went silent.

Vanessa’s face changed.

“What camera?”

Lily pointed toward the bookshelf.

A tiny security camera sat between two framed photographs.

I had installed cameras in the common areas after a burglary the previous year.

Vanessa knew that.

Or at least she should have.

Her eyes moved toward the camera.

Then toward me.

“Daniel, those cameras haven’t worked in months.”

I stood.

“We’ll find out.”

Vanessa followed me toward the television.

“This is ridiculous.”

I pulled up the security system.

The officer stood beside me.

Elena covered her mouth.

Lily remained on the couch.

I selected the living room recording from twenty minutes earlier.

The video began.

Lily was standing near the couch.

Vanessa stood in front of her.

Elena was nowhere in the room.

Vanessa’s voice came through the speakers.

“Tell your father you broke the necklace.”

Lily shook her head.

“I didn’t.”

Vanessa stepped closer.

“You’re going to do exactly what I tell you.”

“No.”

The slap came so fast that even though I knew it was coming, my body jerked.

Vanessa struck my daughter across the face.

Lily fell against the couch.

In the real room, Elena gasped.

One officer cursed under his breath.

The video continued.

Vanessa grabbed Lily’s wrist.

“You’re going to say Elena did this.”

Lily started crying.

“No.”

Vanessa walked out of view.

Seconds later, she returned with Elena.

Elena looked confused.

“Why is Lily crying?”

Vanessa suddenly screamed.

“What did you do to her?”

Elena froze.

“What?”

“You hit her!”

“I did not!”

Then Vanessa grabbed Elena’s arm and pulled her toward Lily.

That was when the front door opened on the recording.

The police had arrived.

Vanessa had called them before dragging Elena into the room.

She had planned everything.

I paused the video.

No one spoke.

Vanessa’s face had gone white.

“That isn’t what happened.”

I stared at her.

“We just watched it happen.”

“The video is wrong.”

One officer looked at her.

“Wrong?”

“It was edited.”

“By who?” I asked.

“I don’t know!”

Elena crossed the room and knelt beside Lily.

“My sweet girl.”

Lily threw herself into Elena’s arms.

That destroyed the final piece of Vanessa’s story.

Vanessa suddenly moved toward them.

“Get away from her!”

She reached for Lily.

Elena stood and blocked her.

“Do not touch her.”

“You work for us!”

“Not anymore.”

Vanessa tried to shove past her.

Elena slapped Vanessa across the face.

The sound cracked through the room.

Vanessa stumbled backward.

For one second, nobody moved.

Then Vanessa screamed.

“She assaulted me! Arrest her!”

The officer stepped between them.

“Ma’am, stop.”

“She hit me!”

“After you attempted to grab the child we just watched you assault.”

Vanessa looked at me.

“Daniel, say something!”

I did.

I turned toward my security team.

“Get her out of my house.”

Vanessa stared at me.

“You can’t be serious.”

“Get her out.”

Two guards approached.

She fought them.

“This is my home too!”

“No,” I said. “It never was.”

They escorted her through the front door.

The officers followed.

Minutes later, I watched from the doorway as Vanessa was placed in handcuffs.

She screamed at the officers.

“The video is fake!”

Neighbors were already watching.

She turned toward me.

“You’ll regret this!”

I held Lily against my chest.

Her little arms wrapped around my neck.

Vanessa kept screaming.

“That recording proves nothing!”

I looked directly at her.

“So was your entire story.”

The police car drove away.

I thought it was over.

I was wrong.

That night, after Lily finally fell asleep beside Elena, I returned downstairs.

The living room was silent.

I replayed the footage again.

This time I noticed something I had missed.

Before Vanessa slapped Lily, she glanced toward the hallway.

Someone had been standing there.

I switched cameras.

My blood went cold.

The hallway recording showed a woman watching everything.

She had seen Vanessa threaten Lily.

She had seen Vanessa raise her hand.

May you like

And she had walked away without stopping her.

It was my mother.
