Chapter 4

Lily remembered the papers because one had her name printed across the top.
She could not remember everything else.
She only remembered Vanessa becoming furious when she found her holding them.
“She said I was a little thief,” Lily whispered.
I felt sick.
“You were not stealing.”
“I know.”
“When did this happen?”
“Maybe before Christmas.”
Six months.
My daughter had carried this alone for six months.
Rachel Owens documented everything.
Then she told me something I desperately needed to hear.
“Based on what I have seen today, I am not removing Lily from this home.”
I closed my eyes.
“Thank you.”
“This investigation is not finished.”
“I understand.”
“But the security footage, Elena’s statement, Lily’s interview, and the timing of this new complaint raise serious concerns about retaliation.”
Thomas stepped forward.
“Can you preserve the submitted photographs and metadata?”
Rachel nodded.
“Already requested.”
After she left, I sat with Lily until she stopped shaking.
Then Elena took her upstairs for lunch.
Thomas and I went straight to my bedroom.
Claire’s walk-in closet had remained mostly untouched since her death.
Vanessa hated that.
She had asked me several times to clear it out.
I always refused.
Now I understood why Lily had gone inside.
It still smelled faintly like Claire’s perfume.
I searched every shelf.
Nothing.
Then I noticed scratches near the baseboard behind a row of shoe boxes.
I moved them.
A floor panel had been lifted and replaced badly.
Underneath was an empty space.
Whatever Lily had discovered was gone.
Thomas crouched beside me.
“Someone used this as a hiding place.”
“Grant?”
“Or Vanessa.”
My phone rang.
Grant.
For the first time in my life, I looked at my brother’s name and felt nothing familiar.
No loyalty.
No affection.
Only suspicion.
I answered.
“Hey,” Grant said. “I just heard about Vanessa. What the hell is happening?”
His performance was almost perfect.
Almost.
“You tell me.”
“What does that mean?”
“You requested Lily’s trust documents.”
Silence.
Then he laughed.
“Oh, that.”
My jaw tightened.
“Yes. That.”
“You asked me to.”
“No, I didn’t.”
“Daniel, you were reviewing estate documents months ago.”
“Stop lying.”
His voice hardened.
“Careful.”
“With what?”
“You’re upset. People are already questioning your judgment.”
There it was.
Not concern.
A threat.
“You knew Vanessa was hurting Lily.”
“That’s insane.”
“Lily says you were here.”
“She’s seven.”
“She remembers you.”
“Children misunderstand things.”
“Claire didn’t.”
Another silence.
This one lasted longer.
When Grant spoke again, his voice was lower.
“What does Claire have to do with this?”
“Come to the house.”
“No.”
“I thought so.”
“Daniel, listen to me. Vanessa is unstable. If she dragged my name into this, she’s trying to save herself.”
“I never said Vanessa mentioned you.”
Grant stopped breathing.
I smiled without humor.
“You just did.”
He hung up.
Thomas looked at me.
“He knows.”
“Yes.”
Then my security director entered the room.
“Sir, we found something.”
He led us downstairs to the control room.
A technician had recovered deleted camera footage from an older backup server.
Vanessa had apparently known how to delete clips from the main system.
She had not known the house automatically copied motion events to a secondary drive.
We started with the day Lily said she had been locked in Claire’s closet.
The video showed Vanessa entering my bedroom at 2:11 p.m.
Grant arrived at 2:18.
They went into my office.
At 2:46, Lily walked down the hallway.
At 2:48, Vanessa dragged her toward the bedroom.
Even without sound, I could see Lily crying.
Grant followed.
He stood outside the closet while Vanessa pushed Lily inside.
Then he closed the door.
I gripped the edge of the desk.
Thomas whispered, “My God.”
Grant had not merely known.
He had participated.
The next clip showed them returning to my office.
Grant carried a folder.
Vanessa kissed him on the cheek.
Then she handed him something.
An envelope.
My security director paused the image.
“Can you enlarge it?”
The technician zoomed in.
A logo was visible.
Carter Development.
Thomas looked at me.
“This is bigger than the trust.”
I already knew.
We spent the next hour reviewing footage.
Grant had visited Vanessa when I was away more than twenty times in four months.
Sometimes they went into my office.
Sometimes they sat in the kitchen.
Sometimes my mother joined them.
At 4:17 that afternoon, another video appeared.
This one had audio.
Vanessa placed papers on the kitchen table.
Grant said, “Once Daniel looks negligent, we file the petition.”
My mother sat across from him.
She looked nervous.
“I never agreed to take Lily away from him.”
Grant leaned toward her.
“No one is taking her away forever.”
Vanessa laughed.
“Just long enough.”
My mother whispered, “This is going too far.”
Grant answered.
“It’s already gone too far.”
Vanessa tapped the papers.
“He signs these, the board removes him, the court reviews the trust, and everyone gets what they need.”
My chest went cold.
My mother stood.
“I won’t help you hurt Lily.”
Grant smiled at her.
“You already have.”
The recording ended.
Thomas looked at me.
“Daniel, do you understand what this means?”
“Yes.”
My own brother had been building a case to destroy me.
My fiancée had been helping him.
My mother had known enough to stop it.
And she had stayed silent.
Then my phone buzzed.
A news alert appeared.
CARTER DEVELOPMENT CEO ACCUSED OF IGNORING CHILD ABUSE INSIDE LUXURY HOME.
Under the headline was a photograph of me.

And beside it was the edited image of Lily covered in fake bruises.
Grant had stopped hiding.
