Amazed

Chapter 8

The district attorney added charges of attempted murder, conspiracy, kidnapping, financial fraud, and the murder of Samuel Bennett.

Richard’s polished public image collapsed within hours.

News stations that once repeated his claims now played footage from the courthouse.

The video showed Vanessa approaching Khloe from behind.

Richard looked directly at her.

He gave a small nod.

Then Vanessa pushed.

There was no misunderstanding.

There was no accident.

At the custody hearing, Richard appeared by video from jail.

His attorney argued that Khloe was emotionally unstable and should not be granted sole custody.

Rachel Kim stood slowly.

“Mr. Hale is charged with attempting to murder the child whose custody he now requests.”

“Charges are not convictions,” his attorney replied.

Rachel placed the hospital threat, the sedative report, and the recovered messages before the judge.

The judge granted Khloe sole legal and physical custody.

Richard was forbidden from contacting her or Hope.

Khloe thought she would feel victorious.

Instead, she felt tired.

She returned to the neonatal unit and held her daughter.

“I thought winning would feel different,” she told Harrison.

“You’re still surviving. Healing comes later.”

Hope was nearly ready to leave the hospital when a new problem emerged.

The construction company board called an emergency meeting.

Richard’s forged documents had created confusion over ownership.

Several investors wanted Khloe removed as acting chair until the criminal case ended.

“They think I helped him,” Khloe said.

“They’re afraid,” Harrison replied.

“So was I. Fear doesn’t excuse betrayal.”

She attended the meeting from a wheelchair.

Men who had known her since childhood avoided her eyes.

The chief financial officer, Martin Graves, addressed the board.

“Given the publicity, temporary leadership may protect the company.”

Khloe placed a folder on the table.

“You approved every payment to Richard’s fake suppliers.”

Martin’s face tightened.

“I relied on documents provided by management.”

“My father was investigating you before he died.”

“That is a serious accusation.”

“It’s also true.”

Detective Ortiz entered the room with two officers.

Martin stood.

“What is this?”

“You are under arrest for conspiracy, fraud, and obstruction.”

The board members watched in silence as he was handcuffed.

Before leaving, Martin turned toward Khloe.

“You don’t understand how powerful these people are.”

“Richard said the same thing.”

“And look what happened to your father.”

Harrison moved toward him, but Khloe raised her hand.

She refused to let another threat control the room.

After Martin was removed, Khloe faced the board.

“My father built this company. Richard and Martin used it like a private bank. Anyone who helped them should resign now.”

No one moved.

“Then I’ll find you myself.”

Three members submitted resignations before the meeting ended.

That evening, the hospital called with good news.

Hope could go home the next morning.

Khloe cried as she packed the tiny clothes Diane had brought.

But just before midnight, Detective Ortiz arrived.

Her expression was grim.

“Vanessa was attacked in jail.”

“Is she alive?”

“Barely. Someone paid another inmate to silence her.”

“Richard?”

“He has been in isolation.”

“Then who?”

Ortiz placed a photograph on the table.

It showed Martin meeting a woman outside the courthouse one week before the attack.

The woman’s face was partly hidden.

Khloe recognized the coat.

It belonged to Diane.

Harrison stared at their mother.

“Why were you meeting Martin?”

Diane sat down slowly.

“Because he told me he had proof that Richard killed your father.”

“Why didn’t you tell us?”

“He demanded money.”

Khloe’s stomach tightened.

“Did you pay him?”

May you like

Diane looked at her children with tears in her eyes.

“I did something much worse.”
