Diane admitted that she had met Martin three times.
After Samuel’s death, Martin contacted her and claimed he possessed evidence against Richard.
He demanded five hundred thousand dollars.
“I didn’t have that kind of money,” Diane said. “So he offered another arrangement.”
Harrison’s voice hardened.
“What arrangement?”
“He wanted me to vote my shares in the company the way he instructed.”
Khloe stared at her.
“You helped him control the board?”
“For six years.”
“Why?”
“Because he threatened you.”
Diane explained that Martin had photographs of Richard watching Khloe’s apartment.
He also possessed copies of medical records and private schedules.
“If I stopped cooperating, he said Richard would finish what he started with your father.”
Harrison paced the room.
“You should have gone to the police.”
“I had already gone to them after Samuel died. They dismissed me.”
“So you let Martin steal from the company?”
“I thought I was keeping Khloe alive.”
Khloe felt betrayed, but she also saw the terrified widow her mother had been.
“You should have trusted us,” she said.
“I know.”
Detective Ortiz confirmed part of Diane’s story.
Bank records showed no payments from Martin to Diane.
Her board votes had protected his position, but there was no evidence that she knew the full extent of the fraud.
Still, the district attorney wanted a formal statement.
Diane agreed.
“I’m done hiding.”
Vanessa regained consciousness two days later.
She identified Martin as the person who had ordered the jail attack.
He had wanted to stop her from testifying about Samuel’s murder.
With Martin and Richard both facing life in prison, their remaining allies began turning on one another.
The full conspiracy emerged quickly.
Richard had been stealing from Bennett Construction before he met Khloe.
When Samuel discovered the missing money, Richard followed him onto the bridge.
He struck Samuel’s car with a stolen truck and forced it through the barrier.
Then Richard comforted Samuel’s grieving daughter.
He married her.
He gained access to her accounts.
But Samuel’s will kept the company shares in Khloe’s name.
When she filed for divorce, Richard realized he was about to lose everything.
He planned to drug her, force her to sign the transfer, and stage her disappearance.
Vanessa agreed because Richard promised to marry her.
The push at the courthouse was supposed to look accidental.
If Khloe and Hope died, Richard would inherit the estate.
The trial began four months later.
Hope was healthy enough to remain at home with Diane.
Khloe walked into court beside Harrison.
Her body had healed, but the marble steps still appeared in her dreams.
Richard watched her from the defense table.
He smiled as if he still knew how to frighten her.
Vanessa testified first.
She admitted pushing Khloe.
She admitted buying the sedative.
She admitted helping Richard prepare the forged confession.
Richard’s attorney attacked her credibility.
“You are testifying to save yourself.”
“Yes,” Vanessa replied. “But I’m also testifying because he tried to kill my sister after I did everything he asked.”
Then Khloe took the stand.
She described the years of control.
The threats.
The bitter tea.
The fall.
The moment she woke without her baby.
Richard’s attorney stood.
“Mrs. Hale, isn’t it true that you hated your husband?”
Khloe looked at Richard.
“No.”
“Yet you filed for divorce.”
“I filed because I finally understood that fear is not love.”
The courtroom became still.
The attorney approached the witness box.
“Did you ever tell Mr. Hale you would destroy him?”
“No.”
Richard suddenly stood.
“She’s lying!”
The judge ordered him to sit.
Richard pointed at Khloe.
“She would have nothing without me!”
Khloe did not look away.
“My father gave me a company. My mother gave me courage. My brother gave me protection. My daughter gave me a reason to live.”
Richard’s face twisted.
“And what did I give you?”
