Emma stood on a wooden stool, her tiny hands buried in a sink full of dirty dishes.
Her party dress was soaked to the waist.
“Daddy… I’m sorry I couldn’t finish them all.”
Michael froze in the kitchen doorway.
His new wife, Rachel, was standing behind Emma with her arms crossed.
“What is she doing?” he demanded.
Rachel barely blinked.
“She made a mess. I’m teaching her responsibility.”
“She’s four.”
Rachel sighed.
“You spoil her. She needs discipline.”
Michael lifted Emma from the stool.
That was when something fell from the pocket of her wet dress.
A folded receipt.
Rachel’s expression instantly changed.
“Where did you get that?”
Emma pointed toward a locked drawer beside the refrigerator.
“She told me never to look in there.”
Michael unfolded the paper.
It was a payment receipt from a storage facility.
The account holder was Rachel.
But the emergency contact listed underneath made his stomach turn.
Laura Bennett.
Emma’s mother.
The woman Michael had been told died three years earlier.
Rachel suddenly grabbed for the receipt.
“It’s not what you think.”
Michael pulled it away.
Then Emma whispered:
“Daddy… there are pictures of Mommy in that drawer too.”
