Amazed

Chapter 7

Michael crushed the note in his fist.

“They took her again.”

Detective Ruiz examined the open window.

“The room is on the third floor. They didn’t take her this way.”

Michael looked toward the bathroom.

“The rope is staged?”

“Most likely.”

Ruiz called hospital security.

A camera showed Victor Hale leaving through the loading area with a woman in a wheelchair.

Her face was covered by an oxygen mask.

No guard stopped him.

The fire had been set in a supply closet.

By the time officers reached the road, the vehicle was gone.

Michael returned to Emma.

His daughter stood beside Claire, clutching the drawing of the cabin.

“Where’s Mommy?”

Michael could not tell her another lie.

“A bad man took her.”

Emma’s face crumpled.

“You said she was safe.”

“I know.”

“You promised.”

Each word struck him harder than the last.

Michael knelt and held her.

“I’m going to bring her back.”

Emma pushed against his chest.

“You always go away!”

She ran into Claire’s arms.

Michael stood slowly.

His daughter had lost one parent for three years.

Now she was terrified of losing him too.

Ruiz received a call from the jail.

Rachel had been attacked in her cell.

A woman arrested that morning had tried to strangle her with a bedsheet.

Officers intervened in time.

The attacker had received money from a shell company connected to Evelyn.

“Your mother is trying to silence everyone,” Ruiz said.

Michael looked at the note.

“Then Rachel may be Laura’s only chance.”

The district attorney agreed to a controlled transfer.

Rachel would be moved under heavy guard to a secure interview room.

When Michael entered, Rachel was sitting at a metal table.

Purple marks showed around her neck.

She looked smaller without her expensive clothes and perfect makeup.

But Michael felt no pity.

“Where is the box?”

Rachel looked at the camera in the corner.

“I want immunity.”

“You helped steal three years of Laura’s life.”

“I saved her.”

“You keep saying that as if it erases everything afterward.”

“If I hadn’t pulled her out of the car, she would be dead.”

“And if you had called the police, she would have come home.”

Rachel looked away.

“I was afraid.”

“You moved into her home.”

“Evelyn told me Laura hated me. She said Laura had everything because our father chose her.”

“So you took her husband?”

Rachel’s eyes filled with tears.

“At first, I was supposed to watch you. Make sure you didn’t ask questions.”

“You made me fall in love with you.”

“I didn’t expect to love you too.”

“Don’t call it love.”

Rachel flinched.

Michael placed the kidnapping note on the table.

“Laura is gone again.”

Rachel read it.

Her face changed when she saw the handwriting.

“Victor.”

“Where will he take her?”

“To the cabin.”

“Why demand you?”

“Because Evelyn thinks I know where the box is.”

“Do you?”

Rachel was silent.

Michael slammed his palm against the table.

“My wife may be dying!”

Rachel stood.

“She is my sister!”

“You treated her worse than an enemy.”

“I know!”

Her voice broke.

She covered her mouth, then lowered herself into the chair.

“I know what I did.”

Michael waited.

Rachel finally spoke.

The metal box had never left the cabin property.

She had found it inside the hollow tree but realized Evelyn was watching her.

So she moved it.

“Where?”

“In the boathouse. Under the third floorboard from the west wall.”

“Why didn’t Evelyn find it?”

“Because I gave her a fake box.”

Rachel had filled it with meaningless papers.

That was how she gained Evelyn’s trust.

The real box remained hidden.

“Victor will search the cabin first,” Rachel said. “If he doesn’t find it, he’ll hurt Laura.”

“Then tell Ruiz.”

“I have to go.”

“No.”

“She won’t trust anyone else.”

“She doesn’t trust you.”

“I know how Evelyn thinks. I know Victor’s habits. You need me.”

Michael hated that she might be right.

Ruiz entered.

“We’ll use Rachel to draw him out.”

Michael objected.

“This isn’t a game.”

“No,” Ruiz said. “It’s a hostage rescue.”

Rachel would wear a tracking device.

Officers would surround the lake property before she arrived.

Michael was ordered to remain behind.

He refused.

Laura was his wife.

Emma’s mother.

And Michael’s family had caused all of it.

Ruiz finally agreed to let him approach in a separate vehicle after officers were positioned.

Night had fallen when they reached Lake Mercer.

Rachel walked alone toward the cabin.

Michael watched through binoculars from the tree line.

The front door opened.

Victor Hale stepped outside with a gun.

He searched Rachel, found no visible weapon, and pulled her inside.

Ruiz listened through the microphone hidden in Rachel’s necklace.

Evelyn’s voice came through.

“Where is the box?”

“I want to see Laura,” Rachel said.

“You are in no position to make demands.”

“You tried to have me killed.”

“I tried to correct a mistake.”

A chair scraped.

Laura cried out.

Michael moved forward.

Ruiz grabbed his arm.

“Wait.”

Inside the cabin, Rachel said, “The box is in the boathouse.”

Victor ordered her to lead him there.

Ruiz signaled two officers to move toward the lake.

The cabin door opened.

Victor pushed Rachel outside.

Evelyn followed, holding Laura by the arm.

Laura could barely walk.

Michael’s chest tightened.

They crossed the yard toward the boathouse.

Then Emma’s voice came through Rachel’s microphone.

“Grandma?”

Michael froze.

Emma stepped out from behind the cabin.

She was wearing her blue pajamas.

Claire ran after her.

“Emma, stop!”

Michael turned in disbelief.

Claire had followed him.

Emma must have slipped from her car.

Evelyn swung the gun toward the child.

Everything exploded into motion.

Michael ran.

Ruiz shouted for police to move in.

Victor grabbed Laura around the neck.

Rachel turned and struck his arm.

The gun fired into the lake.

Emma screamed.

Evelyn caught her and pressed the weapon against her shoulder.

“Everyone stop!”

Michael stopped ten feet away.

“Let her go.”

Evelyn pulled Emma closer.

“This child was supposed to secure our family’s future.”

“She is not money.”

“She is a Bennett.”

“She is Laura’s daughter.”

Evelyn’s face twisted.

“That woman poisoned her against me.”

Emma looked up at her grandmother.

“You lied about Mommy.”

Evelyn’s grip tightened.

Emma winced.

Michael took one careful step.

“Mother, this is over.”

“Not if I have the trust.”

Rachel stood beside the boathouse.

“I lied. The box isn’t under the floor.”

Evelyn turned.

Rachel pulled a small metal box from beneath her coat.

“I removed it before I came inside.”

Michael realized she must have taken it during the confusion at the cabin days earlier.

Rachel held it over the dark water.

“You want this?”

Evelyn aimed the gun at her.

“Bring it to me.”

“Let Emma go first.”

“Rachel,” Laura whispered, “don’t.”

Rachel looked at her sister.

“I already stole your life.”

Then she looked at Emma.

“I won’t let her steal your daughter too.”

Rachel threw the box toward Michael.

Evelyn fired.

Rachel fell.

Michael caught the box against his chest.

At the same instant, Ruiz tackled Evelyn.

The gun slid into the mud.

Emma ran to Michael.

Officers surrounded Victor and pulled Laura free.

Michael dropped beside Rachel.

A dark stain spread across her shoulder.

Her eyes fluttered.

“Did you get it?”

“Yes.”

“Then don’t let Evelyn rewrite the story.”

Paramedics rushed forward.

Rachel grabbed Michael’s hand.

“Tell Laura I’m sorry.”

Laura limped across the yard and knelt beside her.

“You can tell me yourself.”

Rachel stared at her sister.

“I wanted your life.”

Laura’s eyes filled with tears.

“You should have wanted your own.”

Rachel began sobbing.

“I don’t know how.”

Laura held her hand until the paramedics lifted her onto a stretcher.

Michael opened the metal box.

Inside were the original trust papers, financial ledgers, and a sealed letter addressed to him.

The handwriting belonged to his father.

Michael unfolded it.

May you like

The first line stole the air from his lungs.

Michael, if you are reading this, your mother has already tried to kill me.
