Amazed

Chapter 5

The cabin stood beside Lake Mercer, hidden behind pine trees and a stone wall.

Michael stopped his car at the end of the driveway.

Detective Ruiz and her officers remained half a mile away.

A microphone had been hidden beneath his collar.

Ruiz’s final warning echoed in his mind.

Keep Evelyn talking.

Do not make sudden movements.

Do not try to be a hero.

But Emma was inside.

Laura was inside.

Michael had already failed them once.

He would not do it again.

The front door opened before he reached the porch.

Evelyn stood there wearing a dark coat.

She looked exactly as she had at Sunday dinner two weeks earlier.

Calm.

Elegant.

In control.

“Leave your phone outside,” she said.

Michael placed it on the railing.

“Where are they?”

“Come in.”

The living room had been cleared of furniture.

Emma sat on the floor near the fireplace.

Her wrists were not tied, but Rachel stood behind her.

Michael froze.

Rachel held one hand on Emma’s shoulder.

In the other, she held a syringe.

Emma saw her father.

“Daddy!”

She tried to run.

Rachel tightened her grip.

“Stay still.”

Michael stepped forward.

“Take your hand off her.”

Rachel’s eyes were red.

“Don’t make this harder.”

“You made her wash dishes like a servant.”

“I was angry.”

“She’s four!”

“I know!”

Rachel’s voice cracked.

For a moment, shame crossed her face.

Then Evelyn closed the door.

“She did what was necessary to control a spoiled child.”

Michael turned toward his mother.

“You taught her that?”

“I taught you discipline too.”

“You kidnapped Emma.”

“I rescued her from chaos.”

“Where is Laura?”

Evelyn nodded toward the staircase.

“She’s resting.”

“I heard her on the phone.”

“You’ll see her after we reach an agreement.”

Michael looked at Emma.

She was pale and shaking.

Her red shoe was missing.

“Let Emma come to me.”

“No,” Evelyn said.

Rachel looked down at the child.

The syringe trembled slightly in her hand.

Michael saw it.

Rachel was afraid too.

“What’s in that?” he asked.

“A sedative,” Evelyn replied. “Emma becomes emotional.”

Michael stared at his mother.

“If you put that needle near my daughter, I swear—”

“You’ll do what?” Evelyn asked. “Call the police? Tell them your unstable first wife has returned from the dead? Explain that your second wife was actually her jealous sister?”

Her mouth curved into a cold smile.

“You will become the center of a scandal. Your company will collapse. Emma will spend years in foster care while the courts decide which broken parent deserves her.”

“I don’t care about the company.”

“You should. It is the only thing your father left you.”

“He left Emma a trust.”

Evelyn’s smile disappeared.

Michael knew Dr. Cole had told the truth.

“You stole from it,” he said.

Rachel looked at Evelyn.

“What is he talking about?”

Evelyn ignored her.

“You always were easily influenced.”

“You moved millions into shell companies.”

“That money belonged to this family.”

“It belonged to Emma.”

“I built your father’s life while he took the credit. I hosted clients. I covered his mistakes. Then he left everything to a child.”

“Because he knew you.”

Evelyn slapped Michael.

The crack made Emma scream.

Rachel flinched.

Michael slowly turned his face back.

“Was that what you did to Laura when she confronted you?”

Evelyn’s breathing sharpened.

“She came into my home and accused me of theft.”

“Because you stole.”

“She threatened to destroy us.”

“No. She threatened to expose you.”

Evelyn stepped closer.

“She never deserved you.”

Michael almost laughed.

“You imprisoned her because you didn’t like her?”

“I protected my son.”

“You watched me bury an empty coffin.”

“You were grieving before she disappeared. Laura had filled your head with suspicion. You stopped listening to me.”

“You mean I stopped obeying you.”

Evelyn’s face hardened.

A sound came from upstairs.

Something struck the floor.

Michael looked toward the staircase.

“Laura!”

A door opened.

Laura appeared at the top of the stairs.

She wore a gray hospital gown.

Her hands gripped the railing.

She was thinner than in the photographs.

Her blond hair had been cut unevenly around her face.

But it was Laura.

Alive.

Michael forgot how to breathe.

She stared at him as if he were a ghost.

Then her eyes moved to Emma.

“My baby.”

Emma turned.

For one second, she looked confused.

Laura had vanished when she was one.

Emma knew her only from pictures.

Then Emma whispered, “Mommy?”

Laura took one step down.

Evelyn pulled a small pistol from her coat.

“Stop.”

Michael moved between the weapon and the stairs.

“Put it down.”

Rachel tightened her grip on Emma.

But Michael saw her expression changing.

She was looking at Laura.

Not with hatred.

With horror.

Laura’s bare arms were covered in old injection marks and bruises from restraints.

Rachel stared at them.

“What did Cole do to her?”

Evelyn did not look away from Michael.

“What he was paid to do.”

“You said she was comfortable,” Rachel whispered.

“She was alive. That was your condition.”

“You told me the medicine only kept her calm.”

Evelyn’s voice sharpened.

“This is not the time for your conscience.”

Laura came down another step.

Rachel looked at her sister.

“I didn’t know.”

Laura’s eyes filled with rage.

“You visited me.”

“I never went inside your room.”

“You stood outside the door while I begged you to tell me if Emma was alive.”

Rachel shook her head.

“Cole said you were confused.”

“You told him to increase the dose.”

“No.”

“I heard you!”

Rachel stepped away from Emma.

The syringe lowered.

Evelyn swung the pistol toward Rachel.

“You weak, foolish girl.”

Emma ran.

Michael caught her and pulled her against his chest.

Evelyn raised the gun.

Rachel threw the syringe at her.

It struck Evelyn’s arm.

The gun fired.

The bullet hit the ceiling.

Michael dropped to the floor over Emma.

Laura screamed.

Rachel tackled Evelyn.

They crashed into a side table.

The pistol slid across the floor.

Michael kicked it away.

The front windows shattered as officers entered.

“Police! Don’t move!”

Evelyn grabbed Rachel by the hair and pulled her backward.

Rachel cried out.

Ruiz rushed in with her weapon raised.

“Let her go!”

Evelyn looked around.

For the first time, she seemed to understand that she had lost control.

Then she smiled.

“You think this ends with me?”

She released Rachel and raised both hands.

Officers forced her to the floor.

Michael held Emma tightly.

The child buried her face against his neck.

Laura stood on the stairs, unable to move.

Michael wanted to run to her.

But he did not know whether she would want him near her.

Laura slowly descended.

Her legs shook with every step.

Emma lifted her head.

“Mommy, why were you gone?”

Laura collapsed onto her knees.

“I tried to come home.”

Emma reached toward her.

Michael set his daughter down.

Emma walked across the room and touched Laura’s face.

Laura closed her eyes.

Then Emma wrapped her arms around her neck.

Laura let out a broken cry.

Michael turned away, overwhelmed.

Rachel sat on the floor near the wall.

An officer held her wrists behind her.

She watched Laura and Emma cling to each other.

“I saved her from the car,” Rachel whispered.

Nobody answered.

“I couldn’t let Evelyn kill her.”

Laura looked at her sister.

“You saved my body.”

Rachel began crying.

“And then you stole my life.”

Officers lifted Rachel to her feet.

Before they led her outside, she looked at Michael.

“Evelyn has another copy.”

“Of what?”

“The trust documents.”

Evelyn shouted from across the room.

“Shut your mouth!”

Rachel’s tears stopped.

“The originals prove she changed the beneficiary after Laura disappeared.”

Michael stared at her.

“Who is the new beneficiary?”

Rachel looked at Emma.

May you like

Then she answered.

“Me.”
