Amazed

Chapter 1

"A little boy in torn clothes ran into my wedding, pointed straight at my groom, and cried, “Daddy!”—but the look on my fiancé’s face scared me more than the accusation.

I was standing beside Ethan in a packed hotel ballroom in Dallas when the doors suddenly flew open.

A boy about seven years old ran inside.

His shoes were worn out, and his shirt was several sizes too big.

“Daddy!”

The entire room went silent.

The boy pointed directly at Ethan.

My hands tightened around my bouquet.

Ethan stared at him.

“I don’t know this kid.”

The boy kept coming.

“Daddy, please don’t leave us again.”

Guests started whispering.

Ethan’s mother, Margaret, rushed forward.

“Security! Get him out!”

The boy backed away from her.

“No! I need my dad.”

I looked at Ethan.

“Why is he calling you that?”

“I told you, Claire. I’ve never seen him before.”

Margaret grabbed the boy by the arm.

“You little liar.”

I stepped between them.

“Don’t touch him.”

The boy suddenly reached inside his pocket.

Ethan moved toward him.

“What are you doing?”

The child pulled out an old photograph.

His small hands were shaking.

He held it up for everyone to see.

It showed Ethan years younger with his arm around a pregnant woman.

Someone behind me gasped.

Ethan’s face changed.

Margaret immediately snatched for the picture.

“Give me that!”

But the boy pulled it away.

“My mom told me Grandma would try to destroy it.”

Margaret froze.

I slowly turned toward her.

“Grandma?”

The boy looked directly at Margaret.

Then he said, “You told my mom Ethan was dead.”

Ethan stumbled backward.

Before anyone could speak, the boy reached into his pocket again.

This time, he pulled out a hospital bracelet with Ethan’s full name written across it.

And Ethan whispered, “Where is your mother?”

The boy’s eyes filled with tears.

“She’s outside.”
