Amazed

Chapter 10

Six months later.

I was huge.

Eight months pregnant.

The doctor said it could be any day now.

Liam was excited.

He’d already picked out names.

For a boy: Superman.

For a girl: Wonder Woman.

We told him we’d think about it.

Ethan was the perfect husband.

He rubbed my feet.

He got up in the middle of the night to get me pickles and ice cream.

He talked to the baby every night.

Telling her or him about the day.

About how much we all loved them already.

Liam was thriving.

He was doing well in school.

He’d made friends.

He’d joined a baseball team.

Ethan was his coach.

They were inseparable.

Margaret kept her distance.

She came for supervised visitation once a month.

At a neutral location.

A park.

A restaurant.

Liam was polite to her.

But he never warmed up.

And she never tried to take him again.

She knew she’d lost.

One night, I woke up.

My water had broken.

“Ethan!”

He was awake instantly.

“Is it time?”

I nodded.

Panic.

Excitement.

Pain.

All mixed together.

Liam woke up too.

“Is the baby coming?”

Ethan nodded.

“Get your shoes on, buddy. We’re going to have a baby.”

We drove to the hospital.

Liam held my hand the whole way.

“You’re going to be okay, Mom. The doctor will help you.”

I smiled through the pain.

He’d started calling me Mom a few months ago.

It had happened naturally.

No big announcement.

Just… Mom.

And it felt right.

The labor was long.

Hard.

Ethan never left my side.

Liam waited in the waiting room with my sister.

Finally, at 3:17 in the morning…

Our daughter was born.

Seven pounds, eight ounces.

Perfect.

We named her Sarah.

After Liam’s mom.

After the woman who had brought us all together.

Liam was the first one to hold her.

After me and Ethan.

He sat in a chair.

The baby in his arms.

He looked down at her.

Awe on his face.

“Hi, Sarah,” he whispered. “I’m your big brother. And I’m going to protect you forever. Just like Mom would have wanted.”

Tears filled my eyes.

Ethan squeezed my hand.

We watched them.

Our son.

Our daughter.

Our family.

It wasn’t the family I’d planned.

It was better.

Because it was real.

Built from pain.

From loss.

From secrets and lies.

But also from love.

From courage.

From forgiveness.

We’d been through hell.

But we’d come out stronger.

Better.

Together.

A year later.

We were in the backyard.

It was Sarah’s first birthday.

Liam was chasing her around the grass.

She was walking now.

Wobbly.

But determined.

Ethan was grilling.

I was sitting on a patio chair.

Watching them.

Happy.

Truly happy.

Ethan came over.

He sat down beside me.

He put his arm around me.

“Remember our wedding day?” he asked.

I nodded.

“How could I forget?”

He kissed the top of my head.

“I’m sorry it didn’t work out the way we planned.”

I looked at him.

I looked at Liam and Sarah.

Laughing.

Playing.

Alive.

“Don’t be,” I said. “This is better. So much better.”

He smiled.

“I love you, Claire.”

“I love you too, Ethan.”

We watched our children.

Our family.

And I thought about everything that had happened.

The boy who’d run into our wedding.

The mother who’d been told her love was dead.

The grandmother who’d tried to destroy everything.

The baby who’d been born from the ashes.

It had been a long journey.

Hard.

Painful.

Full of tears and heartbreak.

But it had led us here.

To this moment.

To this family.

And I wouldn’t change a thing.

Because sometimes…

The best things in life aren’t planned.

They’re unexpected.

Messy.

Complicated.

And perfect.

Just like us.

Liam ran over.

“Mom! Dad! Sarah just said my name!”

We looked.

Sarah was standing there.

A big smile on her face.

“Liam!” she babbled.

“Liam!”

Ethan and I laughed.

Liam beamed with pride.

He picked up his little sister.

“See? I told you she’s the smartest baby ever.”

I watched them.

My heart full.

And I knew.

No matter what life threw at us…

We would face it together.

May you like

As a family.

Forever.
