Amazed

Chapter 5

The drive to my house was silent.

Ethan drove.

Sarah sat in the passenger seat.

Liam sat between us in the back.

He held my hand.

His small fingers wrapped around mine.

I looked out the window.

The Dallas skyline blurred by.

I thought about the life I’d planned.

The marriage.

The children.

The white picket fence.

All of it was gone.

Replaced by this.

A dying woman.

A seven-year-old boy.

A fiancé with a secret past.

We pulled into my driveway.

It was a nice house.

Four bedrooms.

A big backyard.

Ethan and I had picked it out together.

We’d talked about filling those bedrooms with children.

Now one of them would go to Sarah.

Another to Liam.

I helped Sarah inside.

She was weaker now.

Her steps were slow.

I showed her to the guest room downstairs.

“It has its own bathroom,” I said. “And there’s a nurse I can call. She can come by and help with your medication.”

Sarah sat on the edge of the bed.

“Claire, I don’t know how to thank you.”

“Just get some rest,” I said. “That’s all the thanks I need.”

I left her alone.

In the hallway, Ethan was standing with Liam.

The boy was looking around with wide eyes.

“Is this your house?” he asked.

“It’s Claire’s house,” Ethan said. “And for now, it’s your house too.”

Liam’s face lit up.

“Really?”

“Really.”

I walked past them.

I needed to be alone.

I went up to my bedroom.

The wedding dress was still on.

I stood in front of the mirror.

I barely recognized myself.

I pulled the dress over my head.

Let it fall to the floor.

I climbed into bed.

And I cried.

I cried for the wedding I didn’t have.

For the future that was stolen.

For the man I loved who had kept secrets.

Even if he didn’t know he was keeping them.

I must have fallen asleep.

When I woke up, the sun was setting.

I went downstairs.

The house smelled like food.

Ethan was in the kitchen.

Cooking.

Liam was sitting at the counter, watching him.

They were talking.

Laughing.

It hurt to watch.

Because they looked like father and son.

Because they belonged together.

And I was just… the outsider.

Ethan looked up.

“Hey. You’re awake.”

I nodded.

“Where’s Sarah?”

“Sleeping. She’s exhausted.”

He turned off the stove.

“Claire, can we talk?”

I leaned against the wall.

“About what?”

“About everything. About Sarah. About Liam. About us.”

I crossed my arms.

“What about us, Ethan? You have a seven-year-old son. His mother is dying in my guest room. Our wedding didn’t happen. What is there to talk about?”

“I still love you,” he said. “Nothing changes that.”

“Doesn’t it?” My voice cracked. “Because everything has changed. You have a son now, Ethan. A son who needs you. And Sarah… she needs you too. In her final days. Where does that leave me?”

He walked toward me.

“I don’t know. But I want to figure it out. Together.”

He reached for my hand.

I let him take it.

“I’m so sorry, Claire. I had no idea. If I’d known—”

“I know,” I interrupted. “I know you didn’t know. That’s what makes this so hard. It’s not your fault. It’s not Sarah’s fault. It’s Margaret’s. And I can’t even be angry at her right now. Because I’m too busy trying to keep my life from falling apart.”

Ethan pulled me into his arms.

I let him hold me.

For a moment, everything felt okay.

Then I heard a small voice.

“Are you sad?”

I pulled away.

Liam was standing in the doorway.

His eyes were big and worried.

I knelt down.

“A little bit,” I admitted. “But I’ll be okay.”

“Is it because of the wedding?” he asked. “My mom said we ruined your wedding.”

I shook my head.

“No, Liam. You didn’t ruin anything. Sometimes things happen that we don’t expect. And they change our plans. But that doesn’t mean they’re bad things.”

I looked at him.

Really looked at him.

He was such a sweet boy.

Innocent.

Brave.

“Having you here isn’t a bad thing,” I said. “It’s just… different. And different takes some getting used to.”

Liam nodded.

He walked over and hugged me.

“I like you, Claire,” he said. “You’re nice.”

I hugged him back.

Tears stung my eyes.

“I like you too, Liam.”

Ethan watched us.

His eyes were soft.

Full of emotion.

In that moment, I thought maybe… just maybe… we could make this work.

Maybe we could build something new from the ashes of what was supposed to be.

But I didn’t know what was coming.

I didn’t know that Margaret wasn’t finished with us.

I didn’t know that Sarah had more secrets.

May you like

And I didn’t know that I was carrying a secret of my own.

One that would change everything again.
