Chapter 3

I called my father back six times.
He did not answer.
Detective Ortiz sent officers to his house.
They found the front door open, a broken lamp in the living room, and blood on the kitchen floor.
My father was gone.
So were the documents.
When Ortiz told me, Emily tried to sit up.
“Diane arranged this.”
“Mom is in custody,” I said.
“She does not need to be free to control someone.”
Emily was right.
My mother had spent years turning people into weapons.
Ryan did whatever she asked because she paid his debts.
My father remained silent because she threatened to expose his mistakes.
And I had ignored the pattern because I lived in another city and visited only on holidays.
I thought distance protected me.
Instead, it left Emily alone.
At midnight, Ortiz returned with more news.
Ryan had asked for a lawyer.
Diane had already hired one of the most aggressive defense attorneys in the county.
Both denied knowing anything about the missing documents.
“The bottle Ryan carried was found beneath the porch,” Ortiz said. “It contains pills commonly used to trigger contractions.”
Emily covered her stomach with both hands.
“Did they give me any?”
“Your blood tests should tell us.”
I looked through the glass wall toward the hallway.
A man in a dark jacket stood near the elevators.
He was watching Emily’s room.
When he noticed me, he turned away.
“Detective.”
Ortiz followed my gaze.
The man stepped into the elevator.
Two officers ran after him, but the doors closed.
Hospital security searched the building.
They found no sign of him.
Ten minutes later, a nurse discovered an envelope beneath Emily’s door.
My name was written across the front.
Inside was a photograph of my father sitting in an unfamiliar basement.
His hands were tied.
On the back, someone had written one sentence.
Drop the charges, or Thomas tells his final secret.
Emily read the message twice.
“What final secret?”
“I don’t know.”
My phone rang from an unknown number.
Detective Ortiz signaled for me to answer while she activated a recorder.
“Hello?”
My father’s voice came through.
“Daniel, do not do what they ask.”
“Dad, where are you?”
“I don’t know. They covered the windows.”
“Who took you?”
He hesitated.
Then another voice spoke behind him.
A man’s voice.
“You have until tomorrow morning.”
The call ended.
Ortiz immediately began tracing it.
I stared at the photograph.
Something about the basement seemed familiar.
There was a red metal cabinet behind my father.
A faded baseball sticker covered one corner.
I had placed that sticker there when I was nine years old.
“That is our old lake house,” I said.
The property had belonged to my grandfather.
After his death, Diane claimed it had been sold.
Ortiz called local officers.
I wanted to go with them, but Emily grabbed my arm.
“It could be a trap.”
“My father is there.”
“And your wife is here.”
Her words stopped me.
She was not asking me to abandon him.
She was asking me to remember that I could not protect everyone by running blindly into danger.
I gave Ortiz the address.
Forty minutes later, officers surrounded the lake house.
They found my father locked in the basement.
His injuries were minor.
The kidnappers were gone.
But they had left something behind.
A folder containing copies of the missing trust documents.
The originals were still gone.
My father was brought to the hospital before sunrise.
When he entered Emily’s room, he could not look at either of us.
“I am sorry,” he said.
“For which part?” I asked.
He sank into a chair.
“Your grandfather never intended the trust to belong only to you.”
I frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“He divided it between you and Ryan.”
“Then why doesn’t Ryan have his share?”
“Because Diane changed the documents after your grandfather died.”
Emily stared at him.
“That is fraud.”
My father nodded.
“I signed as a witness.”
My hands curled into fists.
“You helped her steal Ryan’s inheritance?”
“I was afraid of her.”
“You were always afraid.”
Tears filled his eyes.
“She said she would give Ryan the money when he proved he deserved it. Instead, she used it to control him.”
“Does Ryan know?”
“He found out last month.”
The truth hit me.
Ryan had not attacked Emily only because Diane ordered him to.
He believed my child’s birth would permanently transfer the money he thought I had stolen from him.
My father reached into his coat and removed a flash drive.
“This contains bank statements, altered documents, and recordings of Diane discussing the plan.”
Ortiz took it carefully.
Then my father looked at Emily.
“There is one more thing.”
May you like
His face filled with shame.
“Diane told Ryan the baby is not Daniel’s.”
