Amazed

Chapter 7

Doctors rushed Emily toward the operating room.

I ran beside her bed until a nurse blocked the doors.

“Her blood pressure is dropping,” the doctor said. “We need to deliver the baby now.”

Emily reached for me.

I caught her hand.

“Do not leave me.”

“I’m here.”

They allowed me inside after I changed into surgical clothes.

The room was bright and cold.

Emily shook beneath the blankets.

I stood near her head and kept talking.

I told her about the little yellow bedroom we had prepared.

I told her our daughter would be safe.

I told her we would take her somewhere Diane could never reach.

Then the doctor said, “You may feel pressure.”

Emily cried out.

Seconds later, our daughter entered the world.

But she did not cry.

The room became frighteningly quiet.

A medical team carried her to another table.

“What is happening?” Emily asked.

No one answered immediately.

I watched a doctor place a tiny mask over my daughter’s face.

Then I heard the smallest sound.

A weak, angry cry.

My knees nearly folded.

“She is breathing,” the doctor said. “She needs help, but she is fighting.”

Our daughter weighed four pounds and three ounces.

They took her to the neonatal intensive care unit.

Emily was stable, but she had lost too much blood.

She remained in recovery while I followed our daughter.

Through the incubator wall, I touched one finger to her tiny hand.

She wrapped her fingers around it.

“We are calling you Grace,” I whispered. “Because you survived people who had no mercy.”

Detective Ortiz arrived that evening.

Diane had been charged with additional offenses based on the storage unit evidence.

Melissa admitted Diane paid her through an account registered to a fake company.

My father was released.

Ryan agreed to cooperate fully.

For the first time, I believed the danger might be ending.

Then a social worker entered Grace’s room.

She carried an emergency court order.

A report had been filed accusing Emily and me of creating an unsafe home.

It included photographs of Emily inside the kennel.

The report claimed I had placed her there.

“That video proves otherwise,” I said.

“The person who filed the report submitted a different video.”

She showed me a short clip.

It began after I locked Diane and Ryan inside the kennel.

The angle made it look as if I had attacked them without reason.

The earlier footage was missing.

“The court granted temporary protective supervision until the evidence is reviewed,” she explained.

“You are taking my daughter?”

“No. But neither parent can remove her from the hospital.”

Grace already needed medical care, but the order gave Diane another opening.

Her attorney announced that Diane was prepared to become Grace’s temporary guardian.

Even from jail, she was still trying to take our child.

Ortiz contacted the prosecutor.

They arranged an emergency hearing for the following morning.

Emily insisted on attending by video from her hospital bed.

Diane appeared from jail.

She wore no makeup now.

Her calm expression had begun to crack.

Her attorney argued that I was violent and Emily was mentally unstable.

Then the judge viewed the full backyard recording.

She watched Diane strike Emily.

She watched Ryan tie the rope.

She watched me arrive and free my wife.

The false report collapsed within minutes.

The judge dismissed the protective order and prohibited Diane from making any custody claim.

Diane suddenly stood.

“That baby belongs to my family!”

The judge ordered her to sit.

“She would have nothing without me!” Diane screamed. “Daniel would have nothing!”

Emily spoke through the screen.

“You are wrong.”

Everyone turned toward her.

“My daughter has two parents who love her. That is everything she needs.”

Diane stared at Emily with pure hatred.

Then Ryan’s attorney entered the courtroom carrying a sealed envelope.

He handed it to the prosecutor.

Ryan had remembered where Diane kept the original version of my grandfather’s trust.

It had been hidden behind the lining of her bedroom closet.

The trust did not give the money to Ryan or me.

May you like

It transferred the entire family company to the first great-grandchild.

Grace was now the legal owner of everything Diane had tried to control.
