Chapter 4
Emily went completely still.
I looked at my father.
“Why would she say that?”
“To make Ryan believe Daniel had no right to the trust,” Emily answered.
Her voice was quiet, but anger burned beneath it.
My father nodded.
“Diane created messages that appeared to come from another man. She showed them to Ryan.”
“Ryan believed her?” I asked.
“He wanted to.”
That answer hurt more than I expected.
Ryan and I had fought before, but he was still my brother.
We had shared a bedroom as children.
I taught him to ride a bicycle.
I paid his rent when he lost his job.
And he had been willing to hurt my wife and unborn child because a lie gave him permission.
Detective Ortiz examined the flash drive.
“There are dozens of recordings,” she said. “Your father will need to give a full statement.”
“I will,” Thomas replied. “I am done protecting her.”
A nurse entered with Emily’s test results.
No medication had been found in her blood.
Relief flooded through me.
Then the doctor explained that dehydration and physical stress had caused the contractions.
Emily still could not leave the hospital.
Diane and Ryan were charged with assault, unlawful imprisonment, and endangering an unborn child.
The prosecutor also began investigating fraud and conspiracy.
But by noon, Diane’s attorney had secured a bail hearing.
“She could be released?” Emily asked.
“The judge may impose strict conditions,” Ortiz said.
“That did not stop her before.”
I promised Emily I would remain at the hospital.
She shook her head.
“Go to the hearing.”
“I’m not leaving you.”
“If you stay because you are afraid, she still controls us.”
Those words followed me into the courtroom.
Diane wore a gray suit instead of jail clothes.
Her hair was perfect.
She looked like the respectable church volunteer everyone in town knew.
Ryan sat beside his attorney, pale and nervous.
Neither looked at me when I entered.
Diane’s lawyer described the attack as a family argument that had “briefly escalated.”
The prosecutor played thirty seconds of security footage.
The room fell silent.
On the screen, Emily screamed while Ryan pulled her toward the kennel.
Diane pushed her from behind.
The judge’s expression changed.
“This was not an argument,” she said. “This was calculated cruelty.”
Diane’s bail was set at an amount she could not immediately pay.
Ryan’s attorney asked for his release, claiming he acted under his mother’s influence.
Then Ryan stood.
“I want to speak.”
His lawyer tried to stop him.
Ryan ignored her.
He turned toward me for the first time.
“Daniel, Mom said Emily was going to take everything.”
“You put your hands on my pregnant wife.”
“I didn’t know she was bleeding.”
“You tied her up.”
His face crumpled.
“She told me it would scare Emily into signing a statement.”
“What statement?”
“That the baby wasn’t yours.”
Murmurs spread through the courtroom.
Diane rose from her chair.
“Ryan, sit down.”
He flinched at her voice.
Then he looked at the judge.
“My mother planned it.”
Diane screamed at him.
Her attorney pulled her back into her seat.
Ryan continued.
“She said if Emily admitted the baby belonged to another man, Daniel would lose the trust. She promised I would get my share.”
The judge ordered everyone to remain quiet.
Ryan’s lawyer requested a private conference.
The hearing was suspended.
As officers led Diane away, she passed me.
“You think Emily loves you?” she whispered. “Ask her where she was the night before your wedding.”
I told myself it was another lie.
Still, the words lodged in my mind.
When I returned to the hospital, Emily noticed my expression.
“What happened?”
I told her about Ryan’s confession.
Then I repeated Diane’s final statement.
Emily closed her eyes.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
My heart began to pound.
“Emily?”
She looked at me.
“The night before our wedding, I met your grandfather.”
I stared at her.

“No,” she whispered. “That is what Diane wanted everyone to believe.”
