Amazed

Chapter 10

The boardroom fell silent.

The director held a trigger in his shaking hand.

His name was Richard Voss.

He had worked beside Evelyn for twenty-five years.

“If these records become public, we all go to prison,” he said.

Khloe held Ethan close.

“The records are already with federal investigators.”

Richard’s eyes widened.

“You’re lying.”

Marcus slowly moved away from the door.

“No,” he said. “She isn’t.”

Richard turned the trigger toward him.

“Stay back.”

Samuel stepped in front of Khloe.

Richard laughed bitterly.

“You should have died eighteen years ago.”

“You should have found the courage to tell the truth,” Samuel replied.

Police had been stationed downstairs because of the threats against Khloe.

But Richard had locked the boardroom doors.

Khloe looked at the smoke detector.

A small red light blinked.

The meeting was being recorded and transmitted to the company’s security office.

She needed to keep him talking.

“You helped Evelyn stage my father’s accident,” she said.

Richard’s face twisted.

“I built this company. Your father wanted to destroy it over one failed device.”

“That device killed people.”

“Progress has a cost.”

“No. Greed has victims.”

Richard stepped closer.

Marcus moved at the same time.

He knocked Richard’s arm upward.

The trigger flew across the table.

Daniel, still recovering and using a cane, had entered through the adjoining conference room with security officers.

He struck the trigger away before Richard could reach it.

Police tackled Richard.

The bomb squad later discovered the device was real.

But Richard had never armed it correctly.

His final attempt to protect Evelyn’s empire ended in handcuffs.

Six months later, Evelyn’s trial began.

Khloe testified for two days.

She described the attack, the forged contract, the poisoned vitamins, and the moment Evelyn threatened Ethan.

Marcus testified against his mother.

So did Isabella.

Daniel admitted his own crimes and accepted a reduced sentence for cooperating.

When Samuel took the stand, Evelyn finally lost her calm.

“You were nothing without me!” she shouted.

Samuel looked directly at her.

“I was a prisoner because of you. My daughter became powerful despite you.”

Evelyn was convicted on every major charge.

The judge sentenced her to spend the rest of her life in prison.

Outside the courthouse, reporters surrounded Khloe.

“Will you keep the Hale name?”

“No,” she said. “My son and I are Carters.”

Hale Medical Technologies was renamed Carter Medical.

Khloe created an independent safety board and a fund for families harmed by the company’s devices.

Marcus resigned from every executive position.

He began working with a nonprofit that supported victims of medical fraud.

He never asked Khloe to forgive him.

He simply showed up for Ethan.

On Ethan’s first birthday, Khloe allowed Marcus to attend the small celebration at Samuel’s new home.

Ethan smashed cake across his face.

Everyone laughed.

For once, the sound held no fear.

After the party, Marcus found Khloe on the porch.

“You look happy,” he said.

“I am learning how.”

“I’m glad.”

Khloe handed him a photograph of Ethan taking his first steps.

Marcus smiled through tears.

“Thank you.”

“This does not erase what happened.”

“I know.”

“But Ethan deserves a father who keeps choosing the truth.”

“I will.”

Khloe believed he meant it.

She did not know whether they would ever become a family again.

Some wounds healed into scars.

Others became warnings.

For now, honesty was enough.

As the sun set, Samuel joined Khloe on the porch.

“You saved everything I lost,” he said.

“No,” she replied. “We built something new.”

Inside, Ethan called for his mother.

Khloe went to him immediately.

She lifted her son into her arms and kissed his forehead.

A year earlier, other people had treated him like an heir, a bargaining tool, and a path to power.

But Ethan belonged to no company.

No contract.

No family name.

He was simply her son.

And Khloe was no longer the frightened woman lying on a hospital floor.

She was a mother.

May you like

She was the owner of her own future.

And no one would ever take either one from her again.
