Amazed

Chapter 9

Khloe stared at the gun.

“You knew he was alive.”

Daniel closed the door.

“I found him six months ago.”

“And you left him there?”

“I tried to move him somewhere safe.”

“You took Evelyn’s money.”

“She caught me at the lake house. She threatened to kill you.”

“So you stayed quiet again.”

Daniel’s hand trembled.

“I have spent my whole life making frightened choices.”

“Put down the gun.”

“I can’t go to prison.”

“You pointed a weapon at your pregnant niece. You helped hide my father. Stop pretending this is protection.”

Pain crossed Daniel’s face.

“I loved you like my own daughter.”

“Then act like it.”

Police sirens sounded outside.

Daniel looked toward the window.

Khloe had activated the emergency alert on her phone before entering.

“You called them.”

“Yes.”

He raised the gun.

Khloe did not move.

“If you shoot me, Ethan grows up knowing you killed his mother.”

Daniel began to cry.

“He will already grow up hating me.”

“He doesn’t have to know you as a monster.”

Police shouted in the hallway.

Daniel lowered the weapon.

Then the apartment window shattered.

A bullet struck him in the chest.

Khloe screamed and dropped behind the couch.

Officers rushed inside.

Another team ran toward the building across the street.

They captured the shooter on the roof.

It was Isabella’s older brother, Caleb Crane.

Evelyn had paid him to eliminate Daniel if the truth emerged.

Daniel survived surgery.

Before losing consciousness, he gave police the location of a hidden evidence file.

It contained a recording from eighteen years earlier.

On it, Evelyn discussed the staged accident with Khloe’s mother.

Khloe could barely listen.

Her mother had agreed to disappear with Khloe and remain silent.

In exchange, Evelyn promised Samuel would stay alive.

Khloe’s mother had spent the rest of her life protecting that secret.

She had died believing Samuel was still imprisoned somewhere she could never find.

The final piece of evidence was enough.

Evelyn was charged with attempted murder, kidnapping, fraud, conspiracy, and dozens of financial crimes.

Isabella accepted a plea agreement and agreed to testify.

Caleb refused and faced trial.

Weeks passed.

Ethan grew stronger.

Samuel began physical therapy.

Marcus recovered from the injection and moved into a small apartment near the hospital.

He visited Ethan only when Khloe allowed it.

He never demanded more.

One evening, he handed Khloe signed divorce papers.

“I left everything uncontested.”

She read them.

“You gave up your claim to the company.”

“It was never mine.”

“You also agreed to supervised visitation.”

“I need to earn more.”

Khloe looked at him for a long moment.

“You finally made one honest decision without being forced.”

“I wish I had done it sooner.”

“So do I.”

The day Ethan was ready to leave the hospital, reporters crowded outside.

The story had spread nationwide.

Khloe was now the majority owner of Hale Medical Technologies.

Employees feared she would close the company.

Instead, she called an emergency board meeting.

Evelyn’s remaining allies sat around the table.

Khloe entered carrying Ethan.

Samuel walked beside her.

Marcus remained near the door.

Khloe placed evidence of the fraudulent testing in front of every director.

“This company nearly killed patients,” she said. “It destroyed my family. Today, that ends.”

One director laughed.

“You have shares, Mrs. Hale. You do not have experience.”

Samuel smiled.

“She has something more important.”

“What?”

“The truth.”

Khloe called for a vote to remove the entire board.

Every hand rose except one.

The last director stood angrily.

“You think Evelyn was the only person behind this?”

May you like

He opened his briefcase.

Inside was a bomb.
