Chapter 1

The invitation arrived in an ivory envelope with gold letters that looked too expensive to touch.
Julian Vance was getting married.
Again.
My ex-husband had cheated on me with a younger woman from his law firm, walked out on me and our son, then acted like abandoning us was a personal victory.
For eighteen months, I watched Noah wait by windows.
I watched him check his phone.
I watched him stop asking why his father missed games, birthdays, and school meetings.
Then Julian invited us to his wedding.
Me.
And our ten-year-old son.
I almost threw the envelope away.
But Noah saw it on the kitchen counter.
“Are we invited?” he asked.
I nodded.
He stared at the gold lettering for a long time.
“I want to go.”
My heart hurt.
“Why, sweetheart?”
He swallowed.
“I want to see if he remembers I’m his son when people are watching.”
No child should ever have to say that.
But I said yes.
The wedding was everything Julian loved.
White roses.
Crystal glasses.
A country club outside Dallas.
People smiling like money could bleach shame clean.
His bride, Victoria, stood beside him in lace and diamonds, looking at me like I was an old stain finally removed.
Noah sat beside me at the back table.
Quiet.
Too quiet.
Then Julian took the microphone.
He laughed through his speech.
He talked about new beginnings.
Second chances.
Then his eyes found me.
“Honestly,” he said, grinning, “leaving that trash behind was the best decision of my life.”
The room laughed.
My body went cold.
Noah set down his fork.
Julian kept going.
“Sometimes you have to clear away past mistakes to make room for someone worthy.”
Victoria laughed too.
I stood so fast my chair scraped the floor.
But Noah touched my arm.
“It’s okay, Mom.”
Then he walked toward his father.
Julian smirked.
“My son wants the mic.”
Noah took it.
His voice was calm.
“I brought you a special gift, Dad.”
He handed Julian a small brown box.
Julian opened it.
May you like
Then he screamed.
And the whole room went silent.
