Amazed

Chapter 18

Elaine received life.

She stood when the sentence was read, as if posture could still save her.

It could not.

Julian received twenty-five years.

He cried when he heard it.

Not for Anna.

Not for Lila.

Not for Noah.

For himself.

Noah watched without expression.

Afterward, Julian asked to hug him.

Noah said no.

One word.

Steady.

Final.

Outside the courthouse, reporters shouted questions.

Lila stepped forward first.

“My name is Lila Hart,” she said. “I was stolen. I was lied about. But I was also loved by the parents who raised me.”

Rebecca sobbed.

Martin held her.

Lila continued.

“Anna Bell was my mother. She deserved to be believed while she was alive. I will spend my life saying her name.”

Then Noah took the microphone.

He looked so young and so strong it hurt to breathe.

“My dad said leaving my mom was the best decision of his life,” he said.

Cameras flashed.

Noah looked at me.

“Losing him was the beginning of getting the truth.”

I pulled him into my arms the second he stepped back.

“I’m proud of you.”

He whispered, “I’m tired.”

“I know.”

“Can we go home?”

“Yes.”

Lila came with us.

So did Rebecca, Martin, Clara, and Mia.

My small house filled with people carrying grief and casseroles.

That night, Noah fell asleep on the couch with his head in Lila’s lap.

She stroked his hair gently.

I stood in the kitchen watching them.

For the first time in years, my home felt bigger than what had been taken.
