Amazed

Chapter 7

We drove through the night.

Samuel arranged a private plane with money from a client who believed in dramatic justice.

Detective Cole coordinated with Tulsa police.

Noah refused to stay behind.

“He found her because of me,” he said. “I’m going.”

I wanted to say no.

But I saw his face.

He had carried this truth to protect me.

Now I had to trust him with some of it.

Tulsa police reached Lila’s house first.

No one answered.

The front door was unlocked.

Inside, there were signs of struggle.

A broken lamp.

A chair tipped over.

A phone on the floor.

No blood.

That was the only mercy.

Lila’s adoptive parents were gone too.

On the kitchen table was a printed photo.

Lila as a baby.

On the back, written in black marker:

Family belongs where power places it.

Elaine.

I knew it before anyone said her name.

“She’s still controlling this,” I said.

Detective Cole nodded.

“From the country club holding room?”

“From everywhere.”

Noah found the next clue.

He stood by the refrigerator, staring at a magnet shaped like a bluebird.

“What is it?” I asked.

“Dad used to draw these.”

I frowned.

“What?”

“When he was bored. On napkins. Receipts. Always a bluebird.”

Behind the magnet was a folded receipt.

Gas station.

Two hours outside Tulsa.

Timestamped thirty minutes after Julian fled.

At the bottom, written fast:

Mom, I’m scared. He says he’s my father.

Lila had left it.

My son looked up at me.

“She’s smart.”

“Yes,” I said.

“And scared.”

“Yes.”

He squared his shoulders.

“Then we find her faster.”

At dawn, cameras caught Julian’s rental car heading toward an old Vance family lake house in Arkansas.

Elaine had claimed they sold it years ago.

Another lie.
