Chapter 2

At the hospital, doctors rushed Lily into the examination room.
I tried to follow, but a nurse stopped me.
“We need space to work.”
“She’s scared.”
“We’ll take care of her. I promise.”
The doors closed.
I stood in the hallway with blood on my dress and Lily’s words repeating in my mind.
Daddy knew.
Ryan had not simply defended Diane after the attack.
He had helped create it.
Mark arrived twenty minutes later.
He found me sitting against the wall.
“How is she?”
“They’re doing scans.”
He sat beside me.
“Claire, I need to tell you something.”
My stomach tightened.
“What?”
“Ryan called me from the police station. He wants you to say Diane was holding the bottle when Lily bumped into her.”
I turned toward him.
“He asked you to lie?”
“He threatened me first. Then he offered me money.”
“How much?”
“Fifty thousand dollars.”
I almost laughed.
We had less than twelve thousand dollars in our joint account.
“Where would he get that kind of money?”
Mark pulled out his phone.
“He said Diane would pay.”
Of course she would.
Diane had always used money like a weapon.
She paid for Ryan’s college, his first car, and the company he claimed he had built himself.
Whenever he disappointed her, she reminded him that everything could disappear.
I had spent years believing he was trapped.
Now I understood that he had chosen the cage because it was comfortable.
Dr. Patel finally came through the doors.
“Lily has a concussion and a deep cut. She needed seven stitches. The scan does not show bleeding in her brain, but we’re keeping her overnight.”
My knees nearly gave out.
“Can I see her?”
“Yes. But a hospital social worker needs to speak with you.”
Inside the room, Lily looked impossibly small beneath the white blanket.
A bandage covered the side of her head.
I kissed her fingers.
“I’m sorry I wasn’t there sooner.”
She stared at the ceiling.
“Grandma said you wouldn’t believe me.”
“I believe you.”
“She said Daddy would make you apologize.”
I swallowed my anger.
“Has she hurt you before?”
Lily did not answer.
That silence terrified me more than any scream.
A social worker named Elena entered and sat beside the bed.
She spoke gently.
“Lily, has anyone told you to keep secrets from your mother?”
Lily nodded.
“Daddy.”
My chest tightened.
“What secrets?”
“He said Grandma gets upset because I’m bad.”
“You are not bad,” I said quickly.
Lily’s lip trembled.
“Grandma locks me in the downstairs bathroom when you work late.”
Mark turned away, covering his mouth.
“How often?” Elena asked.
“A lot.”
“Does your father know?”
“He waits in the kitchen.”
The room seemed to tilt.
Ryan had watched.
He had heard our daughter cry behind a locked door and done nothing.
My phone rang.
Ryan.
I ignored it.
He called again.
Then a message appeared.
Mom can fix this. Don’t make a permanent decision while you’re emotional.
I showed it to Elena.
“Save everything,” she said. “Do not delete his messages.”
Another message arrived.
If you accuse me, I’ll tell them you’re unstable.
Then another.
You take sleeping pills. Remember?
The pills had been prescribed after my father died.
I had taken them for three weeks, two years ago.
Ryan had kept the bottle.
He had been preparing this defense long before tonight.
Officer Grant arrived shortly after midnight.
He told us Diane had been released pending further investigation.
“Released?” I asked. “She hit a child with a bottle.”
“Her attorney argued that she has no criminal history and needs medical care after you struck her with the ice bucket.”
“She walked out?”
“For now. But we collected witness statements, and the investigation is active.”
“What about Ryan?”
“He hasn’t been charged.”
I looked through the glass panel in the hospital door.
A man in a dark jacket was standing at the end of the hallway.
Ryan.
He saw me and started walking toward the room.
Lily noticed him.
Her heart monitor began beeping faster.
“Don’t let him in,” she cried.
Mark stepped into the hallway.
Ryan stopped.
“I want to see my daughter.”
“She doesn’t want to see you,” I said.
“I’m her father.”
Elena called security.
Ryan’s face twisted with anger.
“You’re turning her against me.”
“No. She’s finally telling me what you did.”
He looked at Lily.
For one second, real fear appeared in his eyes.
Then he leaned close to me.
“If she keeps talking, your whole family will suffer.”
Security guards took him by the arms.
As they pulled him away, he shouted one final warning.
“Ask your brother where he got the money for his house!”
Mark went completely still.
I turned toward him.
“What is he talking about?”
Mark would not meet my eyes.
May you like
And in that moment, I realized Ryan had not come to the hospital only to threaten me.
He had come to expose something my own brother had hidden.
