Amazed

Chapter 5

The mechanic’s name was George Ellis.

He had worked for my father for twenty-three years.

“Why did you wait?” I asked.

George looked toward the police car outside.

“Because Diane threatened my wife.”

Mark closed the curtains.

“What happened to Dad’s car?”

“Someone cut partway through the brake hose. It held long enough for him to leave home, then failed on the mountain road.”

My hands went numb.

“Did Ryan do it?”

“I didn’t see who damaged the car. But your father suspected him.”

George handed me a second envelope.

Inside was a photograph of Ryan arguing with my father in the garage.

On the back, my father had written one sentence.

Ryan knows the trust cannot be transferred while I am alive.

I sat down.

My father had distrusted Ryan before I married him.

I thought he was being controlling.

After the wedding, Dad tried to warn me again.

Ryan convinced me that Dad wanted to ruin our happiness.

Then my father died, and Ryan became the person who held me while I grieved.

The memory made me sick.

George explained that my father had asked him to inspect the car secretly.

Before George could deliver his report, Diane visited his home.

“She had pictures of my grandchildren,” he said. “She knew their school. I got scared.”

“Will you tell the police everything?”

“Yes. I’m done hiding.”

Officer Grant arranged protective custody for George and his wife.

The investigation expanded.

Detectives searched Ryan’s office and Diane’s properties.

They found financial records connecting Ryan to the stolen trust money.

But they found no direct proof that he had damaged my father’s car.

Ryan was released on bail.

The judge ordered him to wear an ankle monitor and stay away from us.

That evening, every news station carried the story.

My photograph appeared beside headlines about a wealthy family’s secret war.

Online strangers called me a liar.

Diane’s friends claimed I had trained Lily to make accusations.

Then an edited video appeared.

It showed me slapping Ryan and dumping ice over Diane.

The part where Diane hit Lily was missing.

Comments poured in.

She looks crazy.

That poor husband.

The child should be taken away.

I shut off my phone.

“They’re trying to break you,” Mark said.

“They’re succeeding.”

“No. You’re still standing.”

The doorbell rang.

A woman waited outside with two children.

Police searched her bag before allowing her inside.

She introduced herself as Nora Alvarez.

Lily ran into the hallway and froze.

“Miss Nora?”

Nora began crying.

“I’m sorry, sweetheart.”

Lily slowly walked into her arms.

Nora had worked for Diane for eight months.

She confirmed that Diane used the lake house to frighten children whose parents owed her money or refused business deals.

Most stayed only a few hours.

Diane called it “motivation.”

Ryan had brought Lily there repeatedly.

“Did he hurt her?” I asked.

“He locked the doors. He controlled her food. He told her you would stop loving her if she complained.”

I wanted to tear the room apart.

Nora reached into her coat and removed a small audio recorder.

“I kept records after I realized what they were doing.”

One recording captured Ryan’s voice.

If Claire won’t sign, keep Lily overnight. Fear makes people cooperative.

Another captured Diane.

Her father made the same mistake. He thought he could say no to this family.

Sarah immediately sent copies to the police.

For the first time, we had evidence connecting Diane’s threats against my father to the abuse of Lily.

But Nora looked terrified.

“There’s something else,” she said.

“What?”

“Ryan knows I have these recordings.”

“How?”

“He called me this morning.”

Police had already taken Nora’s phone.

The call came from a hidden number, but she had recorded it.

Ryan said he would trade evidence about my father’s death for Lily.

The room went silent.

“He wants his own daughter as payment?” Mark asked.

“No,” Nora whispered. “He said Lily isn’t his daughter.”

I stared at her.

“That’s impossible.”

“He said Diane had proof.”

Before Nora could explain, an officer rushed into the room.

He held up a photograph taken by the security camera outside.

A man had placed a package beneath Mark’s car and walked away.

The bomb squad arrived within minutes.

The package contained no explosive.

It held a DNA test.

According to the document, Ryan was not Lily’s biological father.

At the bottom was a handwritten message.

Ask your brother what happened seven years ago.

I turned toward Mark.

His face told me the test was not a lie.
